About this listen

Jason West and Sam Kennedy are back!

All those late night conversations when Sam had maybe a drink too many or Jason was half falling asleep. All those playful, provocative comments about what they'd do when they finally met up again.

Well, here they were.

The last thing Jason West, an ambitious young FBI Special Agent with the Art Crimes Team, wants - or needs - is his uncertain and unacknowledged romantic relationship with irascible legendary Behavioral Analysis Unit Chief Sam Kennedy.

And it's starting to feel like Sam is not thrilled with the idea either.

But personal feelings must be put aside when Sam requests Jason's help to catch a deranged killer targeting wealthy, upscale art collectors. A killer whose calling card is a series of grotesque paintings depicting the murders.

Definitely Not My Favourite

** spoiler alert ** This book disappointed me. Even with the full expectation that (as is usual with Lanyon novels) there wouldn't be a lot of romance, this one was almost entirely devoid of it, and in fact, our POV protagonist, Jason, sleeps with someone else mid-book. I recognize that it was pertinent to the plot, in order to round things out later on, but that doesn't change the fact that it *really* bothered me. Sam was absent for what felt like 80% of the book, and Jason was rightfully confused about why things had ended. The whole thing was highly disappointing, even with the HFN ending.

The mystery aspect of the novel was drab, as well. Usually I find this is what makes me want to keep reading, to power through until the end so I can find out who the guilty party is, but honestly...this one felt like it dragged on and on. There were so many convoluted side-plots, tangents, and ramblings about people, parties, and art that bored me beyond words. I skipped paragraphs, which I never do while reading. Ultimately, this one focused more on the "let's talk this through" and "following weak leads" aspect of detective work instead of focusing on following concrete clues. Also, one main irritant of this novel was that there wasn't enough suspense. There was one actual "Monet murder" at the beginning of the novel, and that's it. I wanted there to be more than just the one, especially with it in the title.

One of the most aggravating parts of the book was the ending. It was completely anticlimactic.
