About this listen

Explore the occult from ancient times to the modern day with one of its most respected scholars and practitioners.

Take an enlightening journey through occult history, exploring 100 dramatic incidents, arcane knowledge, and key historical figures from around the world. John Michael Greer delves into two millennia of tradition, from the earliest alchemists to pagan rituals; from the philosopher's stone to cabala, the first tarot, and the Knights Templar; and from the first horoscopes to fortune-telling trials and the birth of modern witchcraft, or Wicca.

Like Waves Breaking on the Shore

This was very interesting--To see successive waves of inquiry into the hidden nature of reality, the flowering of unexpected skills, and vicious suppression, only to begin again several generations later. Greer points out the lineage connections from one generations' occult activities to the next. Oddly, it does not seem to matter that many occult traditions were made up out of whole cloth. These often result in valuable and useful disciplines, even though they may be rooted in made-up stories.
If you want a book that integrates all known historical occult endeavors into one underlying Truth, you may be disappointed. If you want the history of what people tried before in their explorations of hidden realities, or want material for meditation, you won't be disappointed.
Performance-- Seemed a little flat. At times, I thought the narrarator was actually an AI voice reader. His diction was very good, but it would have helped if he evinced a bit more enthusiasm for the material.

A Captivating Book

A captivating read, made all the more captivating by an excellent narrator who is a delight to listen to. In this book, Greer goes over the history of the occult. No single entry over stays its welcome; each entry has enough information to give one a thorough overview of the occult through history. This is an excellent book for the beginner or outsider to the occult. This is very much a book about the occult, rather than a book on how to practice the things of the occult. To the outsider looking in, this is very much a fascinating window into the world of the occult.
