About this listen

Sapphic fantasy romance with a monstrous twist . . .

RUGA KARRSDAUGHTER, dutiful orc princess with a heart of gold, has spent the years since her sister was elected queen serving the orc country of Torden. Her duties now include marrying an elf princess for a much-needed alliance against an outside threat.

ELKETH CERIDWEN, rakish elf princess with a penchant for chaos, has never lifted a finger in her life. Now that an engagement is sprung upon her by the stern elvish king, she has to fulfill a fifty-day betrothal period in Torden surrounded by strangers . . . unless she can wreak enough havoc to get sent back home.

These poor orcs don't know what they're in for.

Elketh is irredeemable

You don't get the warning here like you do in the physical book apparently but there's a heads-up about an "unlikeable main character". I have to say that "unlikeable" doesn't even come close to the rage I felt for this character, wow. She's childishly cruel to strangers that are nicer to her than her own family and her racism towards those same kind strangers is uncomfortable. I tried to muscle through but ended up dropping this book after I kept pausing the audio to scream about the MC way too many times. If you like this book, all the power to ya and honestly no shade. I can still see how some people might like it. I really tried to finish it because I'm usually into these kinds of romance books with weird couples in fantasy settings (LGBT+ is a huge plus) but I can't stomach Elketh's rot. She doesn't think about consequences like a rational adult and doesn't get punished adequately for her actions.

- Ruga is a big sweetheart but a doormat unfortunately. I can see the appeal and would read books with her in them.
- The narrator does a pretty solid job, very pleased with her performance. She captures the venom, snark, and emotions nicely.
- The first half is difficult to sit through but I read somewhere online the second half improves a bit.
