About this listen
"Jane fans rejoice!.... Exceptional storytelling and a true delight." (Helen Simonson, author of the New York Times best-selling novels Major Pettigrew's Last Stand and The Summer Before the War)
Mary, the bookish ugly duckling of Pride and Prejudice’s five Bennet sisters, emerges from the shadows and transforms into a desired woman with choices of her own.
What if Mary Bennet’s life took a different path from that laid out for her in Pride and Prejudice? What if the frustrated intellectual of the Bennet family, the marginalized middle daughter, the plain girl who takes refuge in her books, eventually found the fulfillment enjoyed by her prettier, more confident sisters? This is the plot of Janice Hadlow's The Other Bennet Sister, a debut novel with exactly the affection and authority to satisfy Jane Austen fans.
Ultimately, Mary’s journey is like that taken by every Austen heroine. She learns that she can only expect joy when she has accepted who she really is. She must throw off the false expectations and wrong ideas that have combined to obscure her true nature and prevented her from what makes her happy. Only when she undergoes this evolution does she have a chance at finding fulfillment; only then does she have the clarity to recognize her partner when he presents himself - and only at that moment is she genuinely worthy of love.
Mary’s destiny diverges from that of her sisters. It does not involve broad acres or landed gentry. But it does include a man; and, as in all Austen novels, Mary must decide whether he is the truly the one for her. In The Other Bennet Sister, Mary is a fully rounded character - complex, conflicted, and often uncertain; but also vulnerable, supremely sympathetic, and ultimately the protagonist of an uncommonly satisfying debut novel.

Story
In this irresistibly imagined belowstairs answer to Pride and Prejudice, the servants take center stage. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. But there is just as much romance, heartbreak, and intrigue downstairs at Longbourn as there is upstairs. When a mysterious new footman arrives, the orderly realm of the servants’ hall threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, upended.

For 170 years, Edward Fairfax Rochester has stood as one of literature's most complex and captivating romantic heroes. Story
One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England's finest novelists. Now, it's home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen's legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen's home and her legacy. These people - a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others - could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen.

So cute
I loved this. I thought it was written much in the style of Jane Austen, and I enjoyed the references to pride and prejudice. The narrator was great too, and her character voices were perfect. Her Mrs. Bennett was definitely inspired by Alison Steadman's 1995 portrayal.

Can't help but love Mary
I an heavily biased because I relate so much to Mary but the story itself is simply amazing. It drags a bit at the end and I feel like she deserved better than Tom (only because of his behavior at the end) but this is still so good.

Was Blown away
I have, longed and ached for Mary to marry Mr.Collans since reading P&P as a girl. For years and years, I felt a heavy stone around my neck wondering whatever happened to the plain sister. The ridiculed sister.
Today, I feel lighter knowing her story. It's a satisfactory feeling of relief. I loved this story. The telling and writing of it. I also loved how Mary got exactly what she deserved.
So cheers. To all the Marys out there. This tale is for you. May we all have a happily ever after and marry rich men.

Well written!
Loved this book! Still have 7 hours of listening left, but had to leave a review already! It's so well written and performed. Gives nods to Pride & Prejudice in the appropriate spots. Moves through the timeline of the original story at a good pace from Mary's perspective and then continues with Mary's story. She gives an interesting perspective of Charlotte Lucas' experience and even Mr Collins'. I'm thoroughly enjoying it! Narrator does very well with the various voices. And as another reviewer mentioned, she does Mrs Bennet's voice in the style of the Alison Steadman's portrayal in the 1995 film. Made me smile. Buy this book!
