Publisher's Summary

The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends.

After all, although humans and dogs share a remarkable relationship that is unique in the animal world, we are still two entirely different species, each shaped by our individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (like wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation.

The Other End of the Leash demonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want. Once you start to think about your own behavior from the perspective of your dog, you'll understand why much of what appears to be doggy disobedience is simply a case of miscommunication. Inside you will learn:

  • How to use your voice so that your dog is more likely to do what you ask
  • Why "getting dominance" over your dog is a bad idea
  • Why "rough and tumble primate play" can lead to trouble - and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of trouble
  • How dogs and humans share personality types - and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than "alpha-wannabes!"

In her own insightful, compelling style, Patricia McConnell combines wonderful true stories about people and dogs with a new, accessible scientific perspective on how they should behave around each other. This is a book that strives to help you make the most of life with your dog, and to prevent problems that might arise in that most rewarding of relationships.

genuinely helpful

Should be required reading for anyone with a dog. there's so many good points about how to cut off bad behaviour in people before they turn into problems with their dogs.

Amazing

I started reading the book a few years ago, only gotten about half way through when I had to stop reading along with many other things due to personal reasons. Even with only that much read I highly recommend the book to all my dog owning friends and told each of them that anybody who owns a dog or is thinking about getting one should make reading this book a must.
I’m glad I finally started listening to audio books thus giving me the opportunity to finally get completely through the audio version of this amazing book.
I have two dogs, a horse and chickens, this book as taught me to be a better animal owner by helping me to think more and pay attention more about the actions of my animals and what they may mean.

P.S I also have two young kids, they have never been aloud to hug our dogs but instead we teach them to love our dogs in ways both our dogs and kids will like more, thank you Patricia.

A great listen

Informative and educational. It gives me a better understanding of my interactions with dogs.

The narration is excellent, so good, so much emotion and nuance I usually only hear on books read by the author.

The exact book I was looking for

Patricia McConnell captivated my attention with personal stories from her work, research, and her own dogs. She weaves facts and the science of behavior with stories that will have you tearing up as you drive. A very heartfelt book, she shares her personal journey authentically to make what could be a very dry topic fascinating instead. I'll be gifting this book for sure and wish more dog owners would listen to it. The narration was excellent, natural and appropriate when addressing topics like commands.

I learned so much!!

The author speaks plainly and in such a way that she is easily understood and her point comes across. I have used a few of the techniques in this book so far and all of them have been successful. I only wish I had learned all of this years ago. I am grateful she took the time to write this book so that her knowledge could be shared. Well done and much appreciated!!

Really great information in this book

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It gave a lot of information that made me think about The ways the dogs think and feel. As a professional dog trainer and coach it helps me to see new perspectives on ideas regarding helping people with their dogs as well as a better understanding of the relationship between man and dog. Thank you very much for writing this.

Liked it

Loved listening to this, and was keen to run errands in the car to listen more. I will look for more of her work. Quite Border Collie focussed, which suits me since I have a blend including Collie. Many many pearls of wisdom.
