Publisher's Summary
The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends.
After all, although humans and dogs share a remarkable relationship that is unique in the animal world, we are still two entirely different species, each shaped by our individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (like wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation.
The Other End of the Leash demonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want. Once you start to think about your own behavior from the perspective of your dog, you'll understand why much of what appears to be doggy disobedience is simply a case of miscommunication. Inside you will learn:
- How to use your voice so that your dog is more likely to do what you ask
- Why "getting dominance" over your dog is a bad idea
- Why "rough and tumble primate play" can lead to trouble - and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of trouble
- How dogs and humans share personality types - and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than "alpha-wannabes!"
In her own insightful, compelling style, Patricia McConnell combines wonderful true stories about people and dogs with a new, accessible scientific perspective on how they should behave around each other. This is a book that strives to help you make the most of life with your dog, and to prevent problems that might arise in that most rewarding of relationships.

Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Few of us meet our dogs at Day One. The dog who will eventually become an integral part of our family, our constant companion, and our best friend is born without us into a family of her own. A puppy's critical early development into the dog we come to know is usually missed entirely. Dog researcher Alexandra Horowitz aimed to change that with her family's new pup, Quiddity (Quid). In this scientific memoir she charts Quid's growth from wee grub to boisterous sprite, from her birth to her first birthday.

Amazing
I started reading the book a few years ago, only gotten about half way through when I had to stop reading along with many other things due to personal reasons. Even with only that much read I highly recommend the book to all my dog owning friends and told each of them that anybody who owns a dog or is thinking about getting one should make reading this book a must.
I’m glad I finally started listening to audio books thus giving me the opportunity to finally get completely through the audio version of this amazing book.
I have two dogs, a horse and chickens, this book as taught me to be a better animal owner by helping me to think more and pay attention more about the actions of my animals and what they may mean.
P.S I also have two young kids, they have never been aloud to hug our dogs but instead we teach them to love our dogs in ways both our dogs and kids will like more, thank you Patricia.

The exact book I was looking for
Patricia McConnell captivated my attention with personal stories from her work, research, and her own dogs. She weaves facts and the science of behavior with stories that will have you tearing up as you drive. A very heartfelt book, she shares her personal journey authentically to make what could be a very dry topic fascinating instead. I'll be gifting this book for sure and wish more dog owners would listen to it. The narration was excellent, natural and appropriate when addressing topics like commands.
