About this listen
New edited version.
Kaluszyn, 1939. Nine-year-old Joanna is determined to enjoy her childhood despite growing up without her mother. She is surrounded by her loving grandparents, sweet father, and loyal friend Aleksander. Together, Joanna and Aleksander navigate Kaluszyn and explore what life has to offer. However, neither of them can foresee a series of events that will shatter their lives.
There are rumors about Hitler invading Poland, and Joanna’s father, Filip, vows to join the army to protect his family. Before then, he gives his daughter a dog named Jasper. Joanna and Jasper become best friends from the moment they meet. On the day her father leaves for Warsaw to join the army, despite assurances from her grandparents and Aleksander, Joanna is convinced that things will never be the same. Initially, she is left in the care of her grandmother and her ill grandfather. When her grandmother’s health starts to fail as well, Joanna becomes the caregiver for both her grandparents. On the first day of September 1939, everything starts to fall apart. After the Germans invade Kaluszyn, Joanna must make a decision that will test her limits and take her on a sinister journey into the unknown. Will she, Aleksander, Jasper, and her grandparents be able to leave Kaluszyn before the war arrives there? Will they survive? Will she see her father again?
