About this listen

Based on true accounts of how Parisiennes resisted the Nazi occupation in World War II—from fashion houses to the city streets—comes a story of two courageous women who risked everything to fight an evil they could not abide.

Paris, 1939. Maison Chanel has closed, thrusting haute couture dressmaker Lila de Laurent out of the world of high fashion as Nazi soldiers invade the streets and the City of Light slips into darkness. Lila’s life is now a series of rations, brutal restrictions, and carefully controlled propaganda while Paris is cut off from the rest of the world. Yet in hidden corners of the city, the faithful pledge to resist. Lila is drawn to La Resistance and is soon using her skills as a dressmaker to infiltrate the Nazi elite. She takes their measurements and designs masterpieces, all while collecting secrets in the glamorous Hotel Ritz—the heart of the Nazis’ Parisian headquarters. But when dashing René Touliard suddenly reenters her world, Lila finds her heart tangled between determination to help save his Jewish family and to bolster the fight for liberation.

Paris, 1943. Sandrine Paquet’s job is to catalog the priceless works of art bound for the Führer’s Berlin, masterpieces stolen from prominent Jewish families. But behind closed doors, she secretly forages for information from the underground resistance. Beneath her compliant facade lies a woman bent on uncovering the fate of her missing husband . . . but at what cost? As Hitler’s regime crumbles, Sandrine is drawn in deeper when she uncrates an exquisite blush Chanel gown concealing a cryptic message that may reveal the fate of a dressmaker who vanished from within the fashion elite.

Told across the span of the Nazi occupation, The Paris Dressmaker highlights the brave women who used everything in their power to resist darkness and restore light to their world.

What the critics say

“Kristy Cambron deftly weaves multiple timelines to craft a story as complex and romantic and beautiful as a couture gown. In addition, Lila and Sandrine’s strength and courage in a troubled world inspire us to live likewise. Tres magnifique!” (Sarah Sundin, best-selling and award-winning author of When Twilight Breaks and the Sunrise at Normandy series)

“With real life historical details woven in with her fictional tale, the story popped off the page. Readers will be thinking of this book long after they've read the last word.” (Rachel Hauck, New York Times best-selling author)

“A well-researched and beautifully interwoven treatise on courage and conviction in the midst of oppression.” (Rachel McMillan, author of The London Restoration and The Mozart Code)

Incredible

I learned so much reading this book. I loved the epilogue and the author’s note at the end. The next time I am able to visit the louvre I will assuredly take time to see the exhibits that pertain to the women’s contribution to the war effort. It was a bit confusing at times keeping the characters in place but worth it. Loved it!

Binge worthy!!!

Loved it!
I stayed up many a late night listening and enjoying this book.

The narrator was fantastic. All the different accents she created made it easy to differentiate the characters.

I highly recommend this story!

Absorbing!

Well-researched, meticulous narrative that paints a detailed picture of the lives of women in occupied Paris during WW2. This book will draw you into their experiences, fears, and courage. The narrator is outstanding. Her French and English accents are flawless and she handles American very well. It took me a while to catch on to dual time frames with 2 female protagonists, so pay attention to the chapter titles and dates. Excellent book. Highly recommended.

Couldn’t stop listening!

This was wonderful from start to finish.
The writer gave such great detail into each character that you really felt what they were going through. I love how she tied all of the characters together. It’s a story of great courage, sacrifice, faith, and believing in something greater than your own four walls. I will definitely be reading more by this author!

Great story but confusing narrative l/timeline

Overall the story of women and their contribution in France to the war was excellent.

The timeline was a bit confusing. It jumped from year to year often spoiling pertinent details before hand. I was always confused if I picked up in the wrong part of the book or not or maybe clicked the app improperly and skipped something.

I love reading historical fiction novels the epilogue at the end and the writers know it was excellent to clarify some questions and give a little more information.

The characters were a little bit under developed as well as blend of a little bit together because it was hard to differentiate who was who at times .
Overall excellent book. The narrator was great. I’m always amazed how they can change the voice so much.

Disappointing

I read a lot of historical fiction but this one was trite, terrible narration, clunky writing, unrealistic dialogue, odd descriptions and metaphors like the author was trying to win a bet by getting random words in there

The Paris Dressmaker

This book did not adapt well as an audiobook. The flipping back and forth between seemingly unrelated characters and different years is very confusing. I kept playing parts over again to figure out what was happening.
