About this listen
Selected for USA Today's Best Books of 2023
Selected as Editor's Pick in Amazon's Best Books of 2023
From psychotherapist Katherine Morgan Schafler, an invitation to every “recovering perfectionist” to challenge the way they look at perfectionism, and the way they look at themselves.
We’ve been looking at perfectionism all wrong. As psychotherapist and former on-site therapist at Google Katherine Morgan Schafler argues in The Perfectionist's Guide to Losing Control, you don’t have to stop being a perfectionist to be healthy. For women who are sick of being given the generic advice to “find balance,” a new approach has arrived.
Which of the five types of perfectionist are you? Classic, intense, Parisian, messy, or procrastinator? As you identify your unique perfectionist profile, you'll learn how to manage each form of perfectionism to work for you, not against you. Beyond managing it, you'll learn how to embrace and even enjoy your perfectionism. Yes, enjoy!
Full of stories and brimming with humor, empathy, and depth, this book is a love letter to the ambitious, high achieving, full-of-life clients who filled the author’s private practice, and who changed her life. It’s a clarion call for all women to dare to want more without feeling greedy or ungrateful. Ultimately, this book will show you how to make the single greatest trade you’ll ever make in your life, which is to exchange superficial control for real power.

Story
Journalist and screen/life balance expert Catherine Price argues persuasively that our always-on, tech-addicted lifestyles have led us to obsess over intangible concepts such as happiness while obscuring the fact that real happiness lies in the everyday experience of fun. We often think of fun as indulgent, even immature and selfish. We claim to not have time for it, even as we find hours a day for what Price calls Fake Fun—bingeing on television, doomscrolling the news, or posting photos to social media, all in hopes of filling some of the emptiness we feel inside.

Story
In this revolutionary audiobook, Dr. Lisa Mosconi, director of the Women's Brain Initiative at Weill Cornell Medical College, provides women with the first plan to address the unique risks of the female brain. Until now, medical research has focused on "bikini medicine", assuming that women are essentially men with breasts and tubes. Yet women are far more likely than men to suffer from anxiety, depression, migraines, brain injuries, and strokes. They are also twice as likely to end their lives suffering from Alzheimer's disease, even when their longer lifespans are taken into account.

Story
Journalist Simone Stolzoff traces how work has come to dominate Americans’ lives—and why we find it so difficult to let go. Based on groundbreaking reporting and interviews with Michelin star chefs, Wall Street bankers, overwhelmed teachers and other workers across the American economy, Stolzoff exposes what we lose when we expect work to be more than a job. Rather than treat work as a calling or a dream, he asks what it would take to reframe work as a part of life rather than the entirety of our lives. What does it mean for a job to be good enough?

In Push Off from Here, McKowen delves deeply into each of her nine points: what they mean, how they work, and how every person can live them. She addresses topics such as the correlation between trauma and addiction, the importance of radical honesty, letting go of the illusion of control, the value of community, a reminder that healing is a continual process, and that the process is a gift. Whether you’re just starting out or have been sober for decades, McKowen instructs us to be kind to ourselves: Change is messy and progress is rarely linear, but we can always push off from here.

Une mines d’or

SO good
A brilliant read for those who identify as perfectionists and even for those who don’t. I bought a hard copy as well so I could highlight and reference back to it as it was packed full with insights and wisdom. The power of presence, self-compassion as the antidote to feeling stuck, and the reminder of what it is to be human are a few of the things I found impactful. Also the rich specific descriptions and storytelling were so engaging. The author’s voice is calming and engaging!

I don’t often mark books with 5 stars
A book full of reflections and aha moments! As someone who’s always been ashamed of my perfectionism tendencies, I’ve had lots of takeaways and will be restructuring my thinking about myself.

This is a guide, a very reliable and worthwhile guide.
To begin with the author is also the narrator which breathes life into this book; listening to it was a breeze, not only because it was narrated with proper sense stress and modulation but also because the content was meaningful and each chapter contributed to the next. Taking time to consider this book was, in effect, therapy in of itself and I could relate with what I was learning. It’s funny because as I’m writing this review, I’m reminded of the tendencies of perfectionists that the author describes, which makes me appreciate it even more. I’m glad I invested my time in it and have benefited from it immensely; I hope the same for you. But just to be clear, this is a guide and not a manual; as you consider its contents, you will draw your own conclusions which will help you succeed in discovering what is truly the best part of yourself - the perfectionist in you.

The best and most helpful book I’ve ever read!
Let me start by saying I’m a serial personal growth reader. I’ve been on my own wellness journey for a full decade, and I work in the healing space. This book was a GAME CHANGER for me. I’ve done so much shadow work and wound healing in therapy.. but this book hit me deeper than anything - because it perfectly described my inner dialogue on a day to day basis. I kept saying, “wow, how did you know I think that??” Her solutions are super helpful. I had never before pieced together that my tendency for self-punishment was directly tied to my ability to allow joy and pleasure. I see everything in my life differently thanks to this book, and I am now IN THE MOMENT able to choose if I will continue to punish myself for imperfection or allow myself to be free. AND now I know how to use my perfectionism as the strength and gift that it is! Amazing book.
