Publisher's Summary

In The Plains of Passage, orphaned Ayla and wandering Jondalar search for a place on Earth they can call home

Ayla and Jondalar set out on horseback across the windswept grasslands of Ice Age Europe. To the hunter gatherers of their world - who have never seen tame animals - Ayla and Jondalar appear enigmatic and frightening.

The mystery surrounding the woman, who speaks with a strange accent and talks to animals with their own sounds, is heightened by her control of a large, menacing wolf. The tall, yellow-haired man who rides by her side is also held in awe, not only for the magnificent stallion he commands, but for his skill as an artificer of stone tools, and for the new weapon he devises that makes hunting less perilous.

In the course of their cross-continental odyssey, Ayla and Jondalar encounter both savage enemies and brave friends. Together they learn that the vast and unkown world can be difficult and dangerous, but breathtakingly beautiful and enlightening as well.

What the critics say

"Pure entertainment at its sublime, wholly exhilarating, best." ( Los Angeles Times)
"Thrilling....This magical book is rich in details of all kinds....but it it the depth of the characters' emotional lives....that gives the novel such a stranglehold." ( Cosmopolitan)

So sorry this story ended!!

I have been listening to the Earth Children books for a few months now and have thoroughly enjoyed each book and The Plains of Passage was no exception. The reader has a very interesting style that I enjoy immensely as she adds to the story and does not distract the listener at all. I read this series years ago and lived it as much now as then.

50 shades of "hay" in prehistoric times

I've always loved this series. but the repetition of (pleasures, healing, hunting, gathering, every single thing that happened in the first 3 books) kind of ruined it. people could pretty much pick up this book and not have to read the other books. I really wish there was more about the Clan. maybe a closure about Durc. I've read the next 2 books, and it's much of the same. I will not be purchasing the last however due to the ridiculous accent they dumped on Ayla. from wanting to shake sense in Jondalar, to cheering Wolf and Ayla on, to eyerolling at all the pleasures scenes (pretty much copy and paste at this point), to crying at some of the really tragic places (thankfully few), this was a kiddy roller coaster of interest, and emotions.

the narrator is pretty good. she has the patience of a saint repeating the same thing over and over. I'm also 99% sure she's the one who did voice recordings for the country wide doctor automated answering service. 99% lol.

4 Stories and now a weird Accent

The story is great! Please tell me why, after 4 other books read, Ayla now has a Russian? type accent!?!

Great story as per usual

Great 4th part to Ayla and Jondalar’s adventure. Though lots of fornications to be had apparently lol. Looking forward to the fifth part

The deepest one yet

The details of the interactions.. the intricacies and subtleties of interplay with life forms in this book touched me profoundly and was actually healing for my being. As a woman of the others and having lived with a clan man in the Arctic regions for about a decade, hunting and learning the ways, I feel very connected to this story. It also helps me look at the old tribal practices and rites we used to honour and I truly believe that so many of us feel lost of useless because we don’t know our place on this earth. So much more I can say. Thank you all who contributed to this most remarkable book being birthed for us to be cradled by. Bear of Fox Tribe of Avalon.

background noise

I love the series. It is really frusterating having the background noise though. I can hear talking or echo in the background.
