Publisher's Summary

A young woman, an old woman, and the story of a lifetime…

When Iola Anne Poole, an old-timer on Hatteras Island, passes away in her bed at ninety-one, the struggling young mother in her rental cottage, Tandi Jo Reese, finds herself charged with the task of cleaning out the rambling Victorian house.

Running from a messy, dangerous past, Tandi never expects to find more than a temporary hiding place within Iola's walls, but everything changes with the discovery of eighty-one carefully decorated prayer boxes, one for each year, dating from Iola's youth to her last days. Hidden in the boxes is the story of a lifetime, written on random bits of paper - the hopes and wishes, fears and thoughts of an unassuming but complex woman passing through the seasons of an extraordinary, unsung life, filled with journeys of faith, observations on love, and one final lesson that could change everything.

Disappointed in this one

The story was a little sad…I like uplifting stories. Was going to quit listening many times, but, i did finish it and it did improve near the end.

Great story poor narration

A typical Lisa Wingate story that is well written. The narrator however is difficult to understand as her voice trails off at the end of sentences. I slowed down the speed to .75 which helped. Her charming accent adds authenticity once you get used to it but there is little variation for the different characters.

Love this story and how it was read. Kindness and faith that makes one feel hope in our fellow man.

I strongly recommend this book.

I love this book and the narrator. it's a very touching story. It made me want to be kinder, tell my family and friends how much I love them and it especially made me want to become closer to our heavenly Father through prayer.

Endearing but, at times, confusing

Lisa Wingate is surely one of my favourite authors though at times the back and forth shifts often leave the reader trying to keep up with the changing locations and character updates.

Poor narration.

I'm afraid the narrator fades out at the end off sentences. Also her accents for other characters is almost unintelligable.
