On the world of Marconen, your first Break determines the trajectory of your life. Calvin chose magic.

Without proper schooling or a mentor, the boy is dragged by the cruel whims of fate across the face of the planet, blending together different schools of magic and powerful abilities to create something new.

But there's a deeper secret behind his success. Why was he born an exile from his country? Why is his System so strange, and why does it keep talking to him?

As the march of time continues, something evil grows in power across the ocean.

A bit unbalanced but overall solid sci-fi fantasy

I'm coming to this book after reading the author's superhero novel 'Industrial Strength Magic'.

'The Problem With Princesses' is a fantasy novel that is reminiscent of Industrial Strength Magic in some ways. There's camaraderie and mutual lust between teens, a well done LitRPG system with stats that is slowly making the main character super powerful, and a fascinating behind the scenes background that hints at being science fiction. As the book progresses, you begin to realize that those hints are becoming more and more obvious, and that the book is deeper than it seems at first.

But unlike Industrial Strength Magic, the Problem with Princesses is a lot more openly salacious, and the banter, while excellent, is balanced with 21st century dialogue from a mystery programmer character who's funny but out of place in a fantasy world. Which is part of the mystery around the setting, but still feels odd. And like Industrial Strength Magic, the book suffers from no clear plot line - it seems to bounce from one situation to the next without the main character really having a plan.

Meanwhile, the book is expertly narrated by several performers, and it's got accents galore. The characters are likeable and the background is fleshed out. I also enjoy that the main character is growing in power but still not close to being unstoppable.

I'm engaged enough by the book to keep reading the series. I want to know more about Calvin's powers, the background to this world and its magic, and what's happening with The One. I do wish the book was a little more streamlined and - surprisingly - a little less in your face about sex. The one enemy princess, for example, is over the line I'm comfortable with, which makes it hard to recommend this book to anyone I know in real life.

not for me

this one was in my wishlist for a while. i should have left it there for a while longer. it started off okay but floundered pretty quickly. A scatterbrained plot and storyline that could not focus on anything. I really wanted this one to be good, but the more content I read/listen to in the Litrpg genre, very few stand out. I had hopes this one would but it fell very short. I will not waste a credit on book two. maybe it will get better, but unless it's on sale or free.....
