About this listen

A Reese's Book Club x Hello Sunshine on Audible Pick

“So excited to share my February pick for Reese’s Book Club: The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory! It starts with a proposal in front of 45,000 people at Dodger Stadium. But it’s not exactly love and baseball for Nikole (who says no!!!), and as she’s chased out of the stadium by live camera crews, she’s saved by a couple...of siblings.... Find out what happens next!” (Reese Witherspoon)

The New York Times best seller

"There is so much to relate to and throughout the novel, there is a sharp feminist edge. Loved this one, and you will too." (New York Times best-selling author Roxane Gay)

The best-selling author of The Wedding Date serves up a novel about what happens when a public proposal doesn't turn into a happy ending, thanks to a woman who knows exactly how to make one on her own....

When someone asks you to spend your life with him, it shouldn't come as a surprise - or happen in front of 45,000 people.

When freelance writer Nikole Paterson goes to a Dodgers game with her actor boyfriend, his man bun, and his bros, the last thing she expects is a scoreboard proposal. Saying no isn't the hard part - they've only been dating for five months, and he can't even spell her name correctly. The hard part is having to face a stadium full of disappointed fans....

At the game with his sister, Carlos Ibarra comes to Nik's rescue and rushes her away from a camera crew. He's even there for her when the video goes viral and Nik's social media blows up - in a bad way. Nik knows that in the wilds of LA, a handsome doctor like Carlos can't be looking for anything serious, so she embarks on an epic rebound with him, filled with food, fun, and fantastic sex. But when their glorified hookups start breaking the rules, one of them has to be smart enough to put on the brakes....

That Spanish accent though

Narrator is good but that Spanish accent is no bueno.
The story is pretty boring and tactless. The characters are awesome on paper but are poorly executed and all have the same voice.
Also Nik left a dudebro for another dudebro.

Cute Rom-Com

This was a cute story. Nice and light and fast. the narration was a little clunky, but otherwise really good.

fun and VERY light

I'm going to start this by saying, I did like this story. It's fun and very very very light. I think it would be better to just read it rather than listen to the audio book. The narrator did a great job but listening to the audio version highlights the weakness in the writing. Her boyfriend got kind of mean and crazy when she rejected his proposal I kept kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop with the boyfriend but the stakes continued to be very low. This could not be considered literature but it is fun and light. I recommend reading it on a plane or a beach :)

Not my thing

Waaaaaaay to boring for me. Surprised it has such good reviews. Nothing special or inspiring about the plot. The narrator was blah. Maybe I’m just in the wrong head space.

Surprised this was part of Reese Witherspoons Book Club...

Found just about the entire book to be irritating and cringeworthy. I was hoping for an easy, casual listen but ended up having to force myself to the end so I hadn’t wasted a credit.
Take out the excessive amount of boring, unnecessary sex scenes and it’s just a cheesy and predictable pre-teen novel.
Unfortunately, I don’t think this narrator was the right one for this book either. Maybe that would have made a slight difference but she definitely didn’t help.

Unfortunately it's just not a good book

I hate giving negative reviews but this book was just bad. I wanted something light and easy after reading a few heavy novels but this was disappointing.

Pros
The diversity of the characters is great

Cons
The author introduces the characters' ethnicities in a blunt and ridiculous way. In order to get across that one of them is black the author has the female protagonist getting pissed off at the Male protagonist for not telling her his best friends fiancee is black.

The Male protagonist is very clearly written by a woman. His thoughts and dialogue are very 'high school girl' to me.

The dialogue between characters is very awkward and childish, I found myself rolling my eyes the whole way through.

This book has the pretense of being about female empowerment, but the male protagonist makes women sound needy, incompetent and uninteresting. The female protagonist and her friends play very stereotypical and cliche women, and the author somehow accomplishes the opposite when trying to make them seem independent and strong.

The phrasing and dialogue is incredibly repetitive, and the characters are always declaring they 'will never do this' or their friends 'can never do that ever again'. The exaggeration gets old and immature quickly.

The author tries to make the Male protagonist seems super cultured and cool. Referencing the 'east side' often when it adds nothing to the story, and going out for tacos like no one has every heard of a taco before. She also makes it seem like making scrambled eggs, bacon and toast is a feat no one has ever accomplished before.

The narrator for this book was also a poor choice. She just didn't fit the vibe in my opinion and it made it all sound more awkward in the end

Pointless...

This is one of the worst stories I have ever read/listened to. Pointless, predictable, not engaging. At first I thought the narration was the problem until I realized she was just doing her best reading a bad book. The sex scenes were unnecessary and awkward (I’m not a prude, they were just gratuitous and also not enjoyable to listen to). Skip this one and find some other cutesie rom/com option instead.
