First and foremost, I personally could not stand the narrator’s voice. Her performance was extremely monotone and her pronunciation of some of the names made me cringe.

The story itself was ok, but just that. It wasn’t anything special. The beginning of the story did grab me, but the rest was predictable. The pacing felt a little off, as the last third of the book felt a little bit rushed. The use of aliases/code names also felt so excessive!

Overall, it’s not a bad book, but I did struggle to finish it (mostly because of the narration).

The narration, story, world building, twists, and subtle romance of this book were incredible. It’s my first listen of the new year. I’m excited to get into the next book of the series!

This book was abysmal. The romance plot is between a student and teacher. The power disparity is never addressed. Was I supposed to cheer for institutional abuse?
The FMC is bounced around from school to some sort of adoption for skills scheme, but it’s ok cause everyone is really nice about it. Is she a lemming or a rube?
The plot has a hurry up and wait vibe. The author spends a lot of time establishing strong female friendships but then she is ‘adopted’ by a strange man. That’s right, her school was like ‘yeah, just take her, it’s cool’. Then within a few days the FMC and her adopted family are super tight. If you don’t feel the stranger danger then it doesn’t exist.
The audio narration has an amateur feel. She butchers every accent. Like nails on a chalkboard. I’m perplexed as to why they hired a voice actor who clearly can’t do accents?
Overall, I did not enjoy Queen’s Rising.
