Publisher's Summary
Mythmakers and world builders of the first order, the Eddingses spin tales that make imaginations soar. Listeners have thrilled to The Belgariad and The Malloreon, magic-filled masterworks chronicling the timeless conflict between good and evil. But with those sagas brought to their triumphant conclusions, fans were left hungry for more. Now at last the wait is over. With The Redemption of Althalus, the Eddingses have created their first-ever stand-alone epic fantasy....
It would be sheer folly to try to conceal the true nature of Althalus, for his flaws are the stuff of legend. He is, as all men know, a thief, a liar, an occasional murderer, an outrageous braggart, and a man devoid of even the slightest hint of honor.
Yet of all the men in the world, it is Althalus, unrepentant rogue and scoundrel, who will become the champion of humanity in its desperate struggle against the forces of an ancient god determined to return the universe to nothingness. On his way to steal The Book from the House at the End of the World, Althalus is confronted by a cat - a cat with eyes like emeralds, the voice of a woman, and the powers of a goddess. She is Dweia, sister to The Gods and a greater thief even than Althalus. She must be: for in no time at all, she has stolen his heart. And more. She has stolen time itself. For when Althalus leaves the House at the End of the World, much wiser but not a day older than when he'd first entered it, thousands of years have gone by.
But Dweia is not the only one able to manipulate time. Her evil brother shares the power, and while Dweia has been teaching Althalus the secrets of The Book, the ancient God has been using the dark magic of his own Book to rewrite history. Yet all is not lost. But only if Althalus, still a thief at heart, can bring together a ragtag group of men, women, and children with no reason to trust him or each other. Boldly written and brilliantly imagined, The Redemption of Althalus is an epic fantasy to be savored in the listening and returned to again and again for the wisdom, excitement, and humor that only the Eddingses can provide.

Story
Six years had passed since the redoubtable knight Sparhawk had triumphed over the evil God Azash and returned to Elenia with Queen Ehlana, his bride. And now a new danger had arisen to threaten the peace of Ehlana's realm. The trouble had started quietly. At home, bandits began to plague the hill country. In neighboring Lamorkand, the customary political unrest turned ominous with whispers that the bloody heroes of old soon would rise again.

Story
The post-apocalyptic world isn't that bad. Sure, there are mutants. But, for the people of New Hope, daily life isn't so much a struggle of finding food or medicine as it is trying to find a new shortstop for their kickball team. This makes it difficult for a post-apocalyptic warrior to find work. Thankfully, an army full of killers is making its way to the peaceful town and plans to raze it to the ground. Only a fully trained post-apocalyptic nomadic warrior can stop them.

Solid story, excellent reading.
This is my favorite book in print, and the reading by Dennis Holland is nuanced in such a way that you find yourself drawn in even when you don't expect to.
The fact that his pitch and tone don't jump around a lot also make this performance brilliant to run in the background when you need to relax and sleep.

I love David Eddings writings!
A total departure from the Belgariad and its myriad spin offs. I love the characters, the storytelling of the writer and the engagement of the narrator. A long book, but definitely worth listening to. I enjoy Dennis Holland's interpretation of this book much more than the narration of Cameron Beierle in the Belgariad where pronunciation errors abound.Dennis has this book well in hand.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat
In their book The Rivan Codex David and Leigh Eddings outline their book writing formula. This book follows that formula, just as all the books they wrote previous to this one did. However, since this book is a standalone novel it lacks the depth of their series. The characters of this book are also poor copies and mashups of characters they created previously. Do yourself a favour and do not read this book, instead read The Belgariad or The Elenium series. The narrator tried, and even though he is good, no amount of good narration can elevate this novel from an overall rating of 1 star. It is rare for me to not finish a novel. I didn’t finish this one and it is first novel I’ve ever returned to audible.
