About this listen
The untold story of a heroic band of Caribbean pirates whose defiance of imperial rule inspired revolt in colonial outposts across the world.
In the early 18th century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates - former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves - this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, Blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote. They cut off trade routes, sacked slave ships, and severed Europe from its New World empires. And for a brief, glorious period, the Republic was a success.

Very good history of piracy's heyday
Not your Pirates of the Caribbean-Hollywood-style story. This is the real thing, which does not detract from the various colorful stories inherent in 18th century piracy. The narration by Lewis Grenville is straight forward and very good. History made entertaining. Recommendable.

Historical and interesting
Good reading, except that the reader kept pronouncing Rogers' as Rogersez. Otherwise it is fascinating history.

A Well Executed Novelization
I recommend this to the discerning adherent of pirates and piracy; to those who were mystified by Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride; to those who were enamoured by films about these brigands of the seas; and for those who want to know more about “what might it really have been like?” - I believe this is for you!
The narrator has an engaging pace without over - selling the tales…
A collected work from several sources, that separates fact from fiction, declaring what may have transpired to result in certain outcomes. This work accounts for what is known to have happened, who the best known people of that short era were, why pirates have become romanticized, and what became of them all.
The Republic of Pirates adds to the fiction, by presenting facts.

Very Good!
The book was very good. The narrator was a little bit dull, but other than that, it was very good. It goes into great detail about the golden age of pirates.
