Fantastic series starter!

New Review! The Rivalry (The Riptide #1) by @bethboldenauthor as narrated by Darcy Stark

This title is so early in the Beth football ‘verse! It’s so heartwarming to see how much she’s grown as an author and to see where the foundations are built for the series’ and characters we love so much.

It’s set just after the Rainbow Clause, so our MCs don’t have the same support and established queer FB 🏈community as we see in the later series. These boys are more closeted, and so much of their story is layered with angst over coming out publicly, how it affects the team, their images, their agent, their lives… and their potential future together. My heart ACHED for them.

TL:DR Heath is an aging QB at the top of his game, full TYPE A personality, with a body telling him to slow down, his friends and family force him to take a small 3 day holiday cruise in Miami in the off-season with his O-line bestie who ends up dropping out last minute to tend to his pregnant wife.

Not wanting to be harassed by said friends, he goes on the trip alone and ends up meeting a smoking hot younger dude that he is immediately attracted to, but there’s two problems:

1) he’s never hooked up with a guy even though he’s attracted to them

2) the man is a rookie QB, Sam, in the NFL on a rival team and if anyone found out that they were hooking up it’d be all over the news and potentially ruin their careers

But those facts don’t stop Heath from flirting, and taking him to bed for an amazing, life changing 3 day fling that neither man is able to forget.

Fast forward to the season, and Heath’s body is crapping out, and his backup just tanked and his owner just acquired his actual nightmare, Sam, his summer fling, as his backup QB. Now he’s his backup, his Rival, his student, but maybe also his future? Is Sam his enemy? His lover? His protege? His everything? Heath just knows he’s addicted.

It was so special to read how Heath and Sam worked through all their drama, finding their way to one another, day after day, ignoring the labels and coming out to the world in the exact way they wanted to. Sooo good 🥹🥰

4 stars. A must read for Beth fans!
