Publisher's Summary

A woman on the run. A crew of Viking mercenaries. A forbidden romance. And the secret that threatens them all.

Silla Nordvig is running for her life.

The Queen of Íseldur has sent warriors to bring Silla to Sunnavík, where death awaits her. When her father is killed, his last words set Silla on a perilous quest: travel the treacherous Road of Bones—a thousand-mile stretch haunted by warbands, creatures of darkness, and a mysterious murderer—and go to Kopa, where a shield house awaits her.

After barely surviving the first stretch of road, a desperate Silla sneaks into a supply wagon belonging to the notorious Bloodaxe Crew. To make it to Kopa, she must win over Axe Eyes, the brooding leader of the Crew, while avoiding the Wolf, his distractingly handsome right-hand man. But the queen's ruthless assassin has other plans and hunts Silla obsessively.

Will Silla make it safely to Kopa? Or will she fall prey to the perils of the Road of Bones?

Featuring an immersive world blending fairy tales with Vikings, The Road of Bones leads you on an adrenaline-fueled chase with fun banter and a slow-building enemies-to-lovers romance. It is book one in the Ashen Series.

Immersive exciting fantasy!

What’s not to love? The narrator was excellent, I really enjoyed listening to her voice. The story and world building were fantastic. This world and story blows SJM out of the water.

Slow burn

It took me a while to get into the story. But it really grew on me! I just bought the next book.

What a winding, twisting road

I loved this story. Silla is so likable, yet so human, and an incredibly nuanced female character. The rest of the cast of characters is diverse, yet always relatable, and so well written! I can’t wait for the second instalment to get to audiobooks, but would love to see this one done in a dramatic rendering, even though the narration is excellent. I do appreciate her “man voice”, and all the diffferent voices she gives the female characters. I’m not usually a Viking story fan, but this pulled me in ❤️

Took me about 25% in to really get into it, but it was sooo good! Love all the characters and where the story line went

A true romance fantasy

Absolutely loved this book, and I don’t like Viking stuff 😅 but here I am. Great performance, could not stop listening, I could easily picture the places and felt I knew the characters. I loved how the romance was done in this book. I totally recommend!

Absolutely Fantastic!

This is the first time I haven’t been able to put down an audiobook since the Empire of Gold! It was so well narrated and so well written.

*SPOILER*

I really appreciate how it so accurately depicted an abusive relationship, where an older man takes advantage of a younger, inexperienced, vulnerable woman. Not that I loved that part of the story of course, the character was despicable for what he did, but I almost feel that the author is writing from experience, I could feel myself getting nervous, it was so accurately depicted. And for a fantasy, it is grounded in realistic and flawed characters. It’s like if ACOTAR was written with better, more human characters. I’ve already preordered the next book, it was fantastic!

Love the story line

Great character building, plot is intriguing and unique. Level of romance to story is beautifully balanced. Can’t wait for the next book to be released.

Not nearly as good as Fourth Wing, but still pretty good.

Overall I enjoyed it. Recommended to me 'if I loved Fourth Wing' but, Not enough action and too much drama. I struggle listening as the narrator's speed is slow and kind of mournful or something, and regularly changes the pronunciation of one name - Eunice/Yonas/Jonas. Eventually I figured out they're all the same person.

I am going to get book 2, so yes, it was a good story taken as a whole. Wish it had more happening in it and was a lot more fun though.
