À propos de cet audio

"...an engaging and enlightening account from which we all can benefit." (The Wall Street Journal)

A better way to combat knee-jerk biases and make smarter decisions, from Julia Galef, the acclaimed expert on rational decision-making.

When it comes to what we believe, humans see what they want to see. In other words, we have what Julia Galef calls a "soldier" mindset. From tribalism and wishful thinking, to rationalizing in our personal lives and everything in between, we are driven to defend the ideas we most want to believe - and shoot down those we don't.

But if we want to get things right more often, argues Galef, we should train ourselves to have a "scout" mindset. Unlike the soldier, a scout's goal isn't to defend one side over the other. It's to go out, survey the territory, and come back with as accurate a map as possible. Regardless of what they hope to be the case, above all, the scout wants to know what's actually true.

In The Scout Mindset, Galef shows that what makes scouts better at getting things right isn't that they're smarter or more knowledgeable than everyone else. It's a handful of emotional skills, habits, and ways of looking at the world - which anyone can learn. With fascinating examples ranging from how to survive being stranded in the middle of the ocean, to how Jeff Bezos avoids overconfidence, to how superforecasters outperform CIA operatives, to Reddit threads and modern partisan politics, Galef explores why our brains deceive us and what we can do to change the way we think.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"...an engaging and enlightening account from which we all can benefit." (The Wall Street Journal)

"Most books tell you what to think. This is something rarer, and more valuable: a book about how to think, and how to learn, without the fear or favor that so often holds us back from inching closer to the truth. The beauty of The Scout Mindset demonstration is it is, itself, an example of the ethos it teaches. The delight it takes in questioning its own premises, and understanding the alternative arguments, will make you want to be a scout, too."(Ezra Klein, editor-at-large and cofounder of Vox, best-selling author of Why We’re Polarized)

“I find myself quoting Julia in my writing again and again, because no one explains thinking and rationality better than she does. The ideas in The Scout Mindset have been stuck in my head ever since I watched her TED Talk. The Scout Mindset is a lens, and once you're looking through it, the world makes a lot more sense.” (Tim Urban, co-founder of “Wait But Why”)

Important work

The perfect antidote to the strident and identity-obsessed politics of our time. I applaud Galef's ethic of truth seeking over groupthink.

A Friendly Beginner's Guide to Aspire Rationality

A more approachable introduction to the choice to seek truth, even when it's hard.

I'm not new to the idea of Effective Altruism, to thinking about or analyzing cognitive biases. I've read Rationality: AI to Zombies and other works by Eleizer Yudkowski and been changed by them - I believe, for the better.

This book serves as a more compelling and beginner friendly look at the core precept upon which the philosophy stands. It has the virtue of being written with the kind of succinctness that makes its points sound clear, obvious and easy to follow.

Unlike other sources I've seen, rather than only explaining how and why the advocated habits are desirable, the author shares good examples to follow and descriptions of how to face the difficulty of diverting from our familiar and reflexive reactions more easily.
The difficulty is not merely acknowledged, but forgiven.
And the difficulty is not only forgiven, but offered aid and stratagems about how to start.

Hypocrisy is deftly avoided in favour of what seems to be a good faith effort at bipartisanship; people who do not choose (or do not know how) to practice these habits are depicted without mockery and some of their potential concerns addressed. Julia Galef chooses her case studies from a variety of political and religious backgrounds, and the lessons learned do not point all in one direction - excepting toward Effective Altruism and the pursuit of the 'Scout Mindset' itself.

I will be thrilled to recommend this book to all those of my friends who find me admirable but enigmatic, and don't think they could do the things I do.

Perhaps I will tell them:
"Maybe you can, and maybe you can't. Maybe you will, and maybe you will not consider it something you want to prioritize at this time. Take this, though. Listen to this, if you ever want to know *why* I make the efforts I make to live as I do. It's not going to trigger you with horror stories like I might if you asked me. I promise."

Your worldview is a living document

“Discovering you were wrong is an update, not a failure, and your worldview is a living document meant to be revised.”
Galef’s clear writing makes is easy to follow her thinking and this is a practical book if you want to examine HOW you make decisions and rationalize your beliefs. It’s also easy to follow and just over five hours of listening, so check it out!

Encouraging, refreshingly balanced

A great resource. Encouraging, accessible, truly thoughtful. I have noticed polarization creeping within myself in the past few years - I look forward to continuing to reflect. My partner and I listened together after having enjoyed Julia's other work on youtube and Rationally Speaking Podcast.

Great Analogy

Scouts and Soldiers; a useful analogy of the dichotomy of attitudes people have towards reality. We all know about the two opposing ways of thinking, but these two interpretations offer insight as to the dynamic relationship between them. Julia Galef makes no bones about which she finds more appealing, but points out that they are both just as human as the other and, lacking the resources to support our inner scout under duress, we are prone to invest those limited resources in being good soldiers as the smart default. I was biased towards her before this book came out, by watching YouTube videos of her speeches and podcasts, but I feel confident objectively recommending that Ms. Galef's work is worthy of your attention.
