À propos de cet audio

A hideous beast with glowing red eyes ambushes Bryn on his way home through the forest.

After a narrow escape, the sixteen-year-old must flee with his foster father Gerald to the only place that promises safety: Âlaburg University, where humans, dwarves, elves, and orcs come together to study the colors of magic.

Bryn soon discovers he can use all three magical colors, which renders him powerful and dangerous at the same time. Will he learn to channel his powers with the help of his unlikely new friends and secure peace for the land, or will he become the one who spells out doom for the enlightened nations of Razuclan?

This is what I’d call solid story and writing. Just not exceptional. I liked the story. I liked the characters. I liked the narration. Just somehow I felt like I was kept at arms length from the characters. I overall enjoyed the listen. And wouldn’t feel bad about using a credit on it. If I see a deal on the rest of the series I’ll probably get the books. But I’m just not hooked on the characters enough to buy the rest at full price.

Simple boy, gets attacked. Discovers hes a magic prodigy. Scared of his own powers. Has a girl he’s pining for. Has some school conflicts. Goes to save the girl. But isn’t some unstoppable superpower. He is easily outclassed by more skilled people. Which is refreshing. It’s all very common story concepts but it didn’t feel like that hindered it. Something was just missing to get me really invested.

Narration was good, not great. Easy to understand and well paced. Voices were consistent and not strained, but didn’t seem like the narator tried at all to match how the author describes the voice. Some characters were meant to be deep, and stuttering in speech. And almost growling. But were read and just angry with hisssing on the Ssss sounds. Not that big a deal really. I’d not mind listening to more books with this narrator.

It really is good. But somehow keeps me at a distance
