Publisher's Summary

"If you liked The Whisper Man, you’ll love this. Alex North has crafted a second novel which is just as gripping as his first and even scarier. Hugely atmospheric and deliciously creepy, it’s about how the past encroaches on the present, and how dreaming influences reality, until in the frightening world of The Shadows, it becomes harder and harder to tell one from the other...and the nightmare takes over." (Alex Michaelides, author of the number one New York Times best seller The Silent Patient)

The haunting new thriller from Alex North, author of the New York Times best seller The Whisper Man

You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile - always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it’s attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet - and inspired more than one copycat.

Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree - and his victim - were Paul’s friends. Paul has slowly put his life back together. But now his mother, old and suffering from dementia, has taken a turn for the worse. Though every inch of him resists, it is time to come home.

It's not long before things start to go wrong. Paul learns that Detective Amanda Beck is investigating another copycat that has struck in the nearby town of Featherbank. His mother is distressed, insistent that there's something in the house. And someone is following him. Which reminds him of the most unsettling thing about that awful day 25 years ago.It wasn't just the murder.

It was the fact that afterward, Charlie Crabtree was never seen again....

These shadows are worth exploring

Firstly, the narrators are very solid and a pleasure to listen two. It worked very well having two and the points of view were well distinguished.

North is a very good writer and fashioned the story masterfully. Suspense was built nicely and the past and the present wove together nicely. Satisfying ending.

First E book

The story was great. And the readings were well done. I’m glad they used two performers for the chapters with different perspectives. Great experience for my first ebook listen.

The Shadows

Extremely boring. Voice was annoying and it went on and one not really getting anywhere I didn’t already know.

Great Narration - Not as good as the Whisper Man

I expected a bit more of this book after liateningto the Whisper Man. Decent plot but It wasbt as creepy/suspenseful as I had expected/hoped.

Best Summer Scare for 2020

I read The Whisper Man and The Shadows back to back and have to say I preferred The Shadows. Beautifully written and narrated it will appeal to fans of Stephen King, Robert McCammon and CJ Tudor. And I am a fan of all 3. In the book you will meet Charlie who is a genuinely frightening character - like The Omen scary. The narrator is an Everyman and very easy to relate to. Lastly, there is a genuinely shocking moment that had me rewinding to see if I had heard correctly. I had and I am still shocked! I listened to this at warp speed and it was over before I knew it. GREAT summer diversion...can’t wait for the next Alex North novel! Highly recommended.

More a mystery than a ghost story.

Narrative dragged for first half, but my interest picked up in later half. Satisfied by the resolution of what happened to these boys 25 years ago. The past is not easily, if ever, forgotten.
