Publisher's Summary

Young, pregnant Fawn Bluefield has just fled her family's farm to the city of Glassforge, where she encounters a patrol of the enigmatic soldier-sorcerers known as Lakewalkers. Fawn has heard stories about the Lakewalkers, who are wandering necromancers with no permanent homes and no possessions except the clothes they wear and the mysterious knives they carry. What she does not know is that the Lakewalkers are engaged in a perilous campaign against inhuman and immortal magical entities known as "malices".

When Fawn is kidnapped by one of these creatures, it is up to Dag, an older Lakewalker, heavy with sorrows and responsibilities, to rescue her. But in the ensuing struggle, it is not Dag but Fawn who kills the creature, at dire cost. And an uncanny accident befalls Dag's sharing knife, which unexpectedly binds their two fates together.

The young girl with the old guy

This novel did not age well. The first part is good…. Till the very stereotypical love story. A bit disappointed.

Fabulous beginning

Lois is never less than fascinating. The last line left me salivating for the next book. It is a joy to me to know there are three more in thee series.

It was... fine.

Wasn't horrible, it was easy to get through, but nothing particularly exciting about it. it was a bit predictable. And I got the sense that it was setting up for future books in the series. I will continue with the series to see how it plays out.

Enjoyable

It is ok, but in this universe I prefer Chalion and the Penric novellas. This novel seems drawn out and not very action packed. But the narration is very well done, and it was an enjoyable listen.

My go to series for comfort

I love Bernadette's delivery of this story. I love the story, I disappear into it when I just need to experience something other than my everyday stuff.

Clever Worldbuilding.. Somewhat Wasted

Lois McMaster Bujold crafts a captivating imaginative Fantasy reality: a socially-distinctive class of semi-nomadic magic-users known as "Lakewalkers" - modeled on 18th century American Indians - travel the kingdom.. using an empathic form of intuitive magic termed "GroundSense" whereby they can detect, share, and manipulate life forces. Their chief societal role is to hunt down huge evil creatures called "Malices" and destroy the otherwise immortal beings by stabbing them with a ritual bone blade infused with the experience of a Lakewalker at the moment of their death. It's an extremely original matrix on which to build an epic Good vs Evil saga.

To be certain, Bujold establishes an involved hypothetical myth-heavy history, writes realistic dialogue, develops fascinating characters with interesting motivations, and provides vivid description & well-scripted adrenaline-inducing action. Unfortunately, she concentrates on exploring a budding love affair between a headstrong but annoyingly vulnerable 18-year-old peasant/"Farmer" girl ('Fawn') and a somehow sensitive & wounded but gruff & dangerous 55-year-old Lakewalker ('Dag'). The Star-crossed Romance plotline is handled capably enough - if burdened with some clichés - but Bujold's Fantasy elements take a decided back seat to an awkward "statutory-rapey" relationship between already frowned-upon misfits (Farmers and Lakewalkers!?! Heaven Forbid this blasphemy!!).
Beware if you're listening with kids, too.. Bujold tries some X-rated writing (the handjob is pretty graphic).
It's not bad if that's your thing.. but still - a blown opportunity.

As to performance: the narration from Bernadette Dunne is likely better than I rate it.. but it frankly irked me. Her whispery timbre and weak male voice portrayals are accompanied by a sing-song staccato cadence that sounds like she's reading a 12-hour limerick (every third syllable emphasized). Personally, it got *annoying* enough to end up detracting from the enjoyability of the book.

Altogether, this first entry in the 'Sharing Knife' series (subtitled 'Beguilement') rates a disappointing 5 stars out of 10. As a 'Plus' selection, it's worth a download - good enough to prompt me to read the likewise "free" Book Two ('Legacy') - but save your Credit should they ask for one.
