Publisher's Summary

From the greatest novelist of the Victorian era comes a ghostly short story, now reimagined in 3D sound.

Put your headphones on and settle in to this Audible Original adaptation of Charles Dickens’ The Signalman, narrated by Academy-Award winning director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, 1917, Empire of Light).

A lone narrator meets a railway worker who is confined to a cold, gloomy station in a deep cutting near a tunnel entrance. This worker is a signalman, and it is his responsibility to give the green light for trains to pass through the area. These are slow, monotonous days. The signalman’s life is not marked by much, until the nightmares begin.

Three times in a row, a ghost mysteriously appears before the signalman – and with each apparition, a tragic accident unfolds on the rail tracks.

Although our narrator doubts the man at first, events soon make him a believer too...

Follow along as the mystery is revealed in spatial audio with Dolby Atmos, bringing the haunting tale closer to you than ever before.

Now available in Dolby Atmos on Audible.

Good find.

This is a good reading of a brilliant short story. Subtle and unsettling ending.
I think it is silly that audible requires a heading and 15 words to post a review.

Marvellous Dickens Brought to life

Just a short story but the sound effects and the narrators voice brought this short story alive. I could picture the setting so clearly. Reminded me of train trips I took in my youth.

Phenomenal performance with surround sound

This short story came to an abrupt end for me, as I wanted more. The surroundsound system, complemented the narrative made the story, much more real, and enveloped you more completely to the story and the characters.

Outstanding narration, good story

Even though readers may be weighed down by the modern sensibility of horror and shock, this story stands out. It is difficult to articulate what Dickens does that makes this work entertaining, even compelling. Somehow I guess genius just makes itself known.

The narrator is a standout star of the medium. Honestly I went into this story grudgingly, as a task I set myself to wade through some of the great writers. I fully expected to be bored. I was instead captured almost immediately by the narrator's tone, cadence and style. He makes "free" books a real value in my Audible subscription.

Why I love Dickens!

I read this about 2 decades ago, but this 3D audio version and performance really enhances the creepyness of the story.
