Publisher's Summary
A hot historical from five-time USA Today best-selling author Jess Michaels.
Born mute, Ewan Hoffstead, Duke of Donburrow, was abused by his wicked father and wretched younger brothers until an uncle swept in to save the day. Still, he carries the scars of his past with him, including a terrible belief that perhaps a "person like him" truly doesn’t deserve the title his uncle fought so hard for him to earn.
Recently widowed Charlotte may be the proper Countess of Portsmith to society, but when she is around Ewan, she still feels like the enraptured little girl who met him decades before when her brother was best friends with him and his cousin.
A planned trip to spend Christmas with their families at Ewan’s estate reunites the old friends. But when a storm keeps the others from arriving on time, Charlotte decides to stop living in fear and pursue the man she has desired and loved her entire life. Ewan cannot resist her seduction, but he fears giving in to his heart. Especially when the family that disposed of him returns and threatens not only his life, but that of the woman he loves.

Fabulous
Fabulous read! My favourite in this series, although all are great. Ewan and Charlotte have loved each other for years, but Ewan feels he is unworthy due to being mute, and Charlotte has been hurt from his first refusal. These two are amazing people, and so deserve a HEA. Enjoyed Danielle O'Farrell as a narrator. Ms Michaels weaves an enchanting story around these two - a must read for all fans of historical romance.

Beginning Author, Beginner Reader, good potential.
As expected from the other reviews, this is not a piece with historical accuracy. It is a sweet little piece of beginner escapism. I liked the concept of a mute duke and the woman who loved him. It is a good story based upon that.
The narrator needed to be speeded up to 1.25x the reading speed. Some of her secondary characters sounded like the “Daeliks” off of the program, “Dr. Who,” robotic, silly, and inhuman. As well, her English accent was what a Canadian or American would imagine it sounded like. Despite all this, it is a good beginner effort, and I enjoyed listening to it. It is not my first choice, but it was enough to make me try this author, and, if there was nothing else available that appealed to me, then I would listen to another book by this author and narrator combination.
