About this listen
Ever since the death of his father, poor Fellworth Dolphin has slaved away as a waiter to support his miserly, cold-hearted mother. When his mother suddenly dies, Fellworth is shocked to discover that she has left him a sizable inheritance. Confused, Fell teams up with Maggie, a plain girl with a similar background, to investigate the source of the riches. But what they find is a closet full of skeletons....
Is it really possible Fell’s father was involved in a long-ago train robbery? Who’s the mysterious woman in the portrait hidden in his mother’s wardrobe?
As Maggie and Fell poke around the village for answers, they find themselves on a surprise-filled path to danger and adventure, and - just possibly - love. But Fell’s sudden good fortune could come to an abrupt end if he doesn’t stay one step ahead of a cunning killer....

Love the narration
Overall a good story. Maggie is a wonderful character. Fell is cringe worthy but can be forgiven due to his upbringing.
All loose ends are tied up nicely.
A good modern cozy mystery.

Great!
I’ve listened to many of MC Beaton’s audiobooks, and have enjoyed them all. Despite being a one-off, this book was one of my favorites. Engaging characters, fast enough pace, interesting storyline. Worth listening to.

Not her best work
I found this book under cozy mysteries, but it isn’t the typical cozy mystery and I found myself wishing it was. This was two people floundering around trying to get information on a 20 year old robbery so the young man who inherited 50,000$ doesn’t feel like he has illegal money.
If it was comical or the characters were remotely likeable I would give this a thumbs up, but that’s not the case.
I’ve read a number of this author’s books, so I was very surprised by how poorly this one was written.
