Publisher's Summary
Hear the second book in The Long Winter trilogy!
They decimated Earth during the Long Winter. Now the Grid has returned, and they won't stop until the human race is extinct. On a ruined world, humanity's last survivors fight against impossible odds. In their darkest hour, they discover a new hope for survival. But it comes at an unthinkable price, with consequences that will change everything.
We thought the war was over. We were wrong. After the Long Winter, Emma Matthews and James Sinclair hoped life would get back to normal. They've settled down in Camp Seven and welcomed their first child, a daughter. And they have waited and watched the sky for any signs of the Grid's return. When NASA discovers that several asteroids have broken from the Kuiper Belt and are headed for Earth, James instantly realizes the truth: the Grid is back.
And this battle will be one to the very end. As he and his team prepare for humanity's last stand in space and on the ground, Emma makes a discovery closer to home, one that will change life for her and James once again. With war raging around them, Emma and James fight to keep their family alive.
In the cold darkness, humanity splinters. New alliances emerge. At every turn, Emma and James face new dangers and question whom to trust. Just when it seems that all hope is lost, James uncovers what may be the key to humanity's survival. But it comes with enormous risks. To implement his plan, he and Emma will have to survive the Grid and another, even more deadly enemy. One thing is certain: their gambit will change the future of the human race forever.

The solar war has ups and downs
There is not much action in this book, I was expecting more combat against the grid, but there is not much on that front. The plot of this book is overall appealing, there is not as much suspense in this book as in winter world. Winter world was better because they defeated the grid, but in this one the grid one. I can't wait to see what happens next in the lost colony.

Great SciFi Follow-up
This is a very good second effort in a captivating SciFi trilogy. Genius Roboticist James Sinclair and Astronaut Emma Matthews - now married and parents back on a decimated Earth - are central figures in a war between the remnants of humanity and "The Grid" (a Borg-like species of aliens working towards the Singularity - the absorption and conversion of biological life into collective pure energy). The novel strikes a nice balance between exploring science-informed hypothetical situations, discussing philosophical questions in human evolution, demonstrating worthy features of human existence (particularly empathy and altruism), and providing a fairly exciting action-based plot (although less effectively than in the first book). The "Pop-Psychology" aspects (survivors guilt and PTSD) are heavy-handed, the combat encounters are well-constructed (but poorly executed), and the Science is somewhat weak, but the overall scenario is plausible. This is quality writing from A.G. Riddle providing a story that Crichton or S.A. Corey fans would appreciate.
The performance from Amanda Leigh Cobb (narrating from Emma's perspective) and Edoardo Ballerini (reading James) is weaker than in the first book (subpar accent delivery is more noticeable in this one, for example).. but they still provide an above-average narration with respectable cadence, tone, and emotiveness.
The first book ('Winter World') is likely necessary to best understand the characters and events in this installment - this is a typical second novel (minimal standalone merit) in that respect.. but 'The Solar War' provides a decent SciFi plot and solid entertainment value. I rate it 7.5 stars out of 10.

Typical Second Book of a Series
Good progress on the story, but.definitely nowhere close to the calibre of Book 1 - there is too much slow fillers, internal monologues - could have used more editing. The fact that James and Emma continue to have little ability to honestly and effectively communicate with each other has gotten even more annoying this time around.

the story is sad and depressing
aside the story being sad and depressing pretty much all the way through, I found that there were at times where the male narrator was nearly inaudible. the first book was better, though also quite depressing. was hoping this one would have been less so

Always Brilliant
At the heart this is a very sad tale. I enjoy the hope and levity weaved in to this very modern story.

kept me entertained
I really enjoyed this series. both books have enough suspense to keep me engaged. the characters were fleshed out an interesting. i hope to see a third book to finish the story. Narrators were good and using both male and female voices was a good choice.

first book was great. this one a drag
the first book was great. this was bad. a lot of mish-mashed psychology and introspection, smattered with short, disconnected plots
