About this listen

The old gods are growing restless. An ancient evil is stirring. Can they stop the coming storm?

Mercenary Casia Greythorne cares about two things: completing whatever her latest job is and earning enough coin to buy the expensive medicine that's keeping her mentor alive.

So when the king himself offers her a job, she can't resist the massive reward he offers - even if it means working with Captain Elander, the arrogant, mysterious right-hand to that king.

Her partner may be infuriating, but at least their mission seems simple and quick enough: investigate the origins of the strange plague that's been ravaging their empire, help find a cure, and then call it a day.

But in a land brimming with old magic and meddling gods, nothing is ever that simple, and nothing is ever what it seems.

As the bodies pile up and strange monsters begin to wreak havoc throughout the realms, Cas and Elander will have to work together to protect their world whether they like it or not. Because one thing is clear: Something ancient and evil is stirring in the shadows of that world.

And their empire will not survive its full unleashing.

Excellent narration but could not save the story

First off the Narrator was so great and her accents so fun. But sadly it could not save this story. You are forever waiting for things to happen and move along and get explained. There is no real character development or backstories or world building to show their motivations and make you like them. The same cycle of event keeps happening over and over and then the end tries to rush so much but with little explaining you get whiplash. Plus the characters are weak then way to strong then weak plus they flip flop on their morals and opinions which leads them to horrible actions that they don't care about. I wanted to love this story so much and kept waiting for it to get better and give me something to grab onto. I tired to like it and even waited 2 days after finishing it to write what I thought but I still felt the same.

Narrator was awesome

Jesse did a great job in really expressing the emotions esp in the last parts for Casia.

a different slog

this was a slogan to get through almost half of the book. I just couldn't continue anymore.

to start there is SO much info dumping that doesn't matter or pertain to what's going on. maybe it's relevant later but it's such an awkward and forced way to dump so much detail into the readers lap that I retained none of it.

I can't stand the main character. she's such a cookie cutter "I'm a badass for reasons but I care so much and make so many stupid mistakes but have the world to come protect and save me. because of a mysterious back story I don't understand. also I'm a multi orphan" and don't get me started on her interactions with the obvious love interest. He literally was crossing swords with her and she's llike "omg! he has such beautiful eyes!" you got a sword battle to focus on and nothing shown before or after shows you're good enough to day dream mid fight.

I won't go on more. but I rolled my eyes enough that I had to dndnf finally.
