About this listen

A chilling, immersive audio experience, The Sound at the End follows the eclectic crew of an Arctic research base and the newcomer who may uncover the secrets they’re each desperate to outrun, written by award-winning novelist Kirsty Logan and performed by a full cast.

On a near-abandoned research base in an Arctic ice field, a skeleton crew works to ensure the centre doesn’t collapse amid treacherous storms. Officially, Trieste Grayling arrives in order to explore and film a sunken shipwreck for a documentary film; privately, she's working through a complicated grief. Trieste soon realises she's not the only one who was attracted to this intense isolation in order to escape her ghosts.

Each of the crew members harbour dark secrets: Mal, the ever-competent medic conducting mysterious therapy sessions, Sweetie, the reclusive engineer with scarred hands, Thorsteinn, the aloof diver tender, Avelina, the temperamental base manager whose stories of home don't quite add up, Grace, an underwater welder and recovering addict, and Judd, the erratic former member of a ‘90s boy band. As they begin to reach breaking point, each one's hidden ghosts finally comes into the light.

what was the story about?

I waited with so much anticipation to hear the ending, an explanation for which never came, which leaves too much ambiguity. Performance was great though.

Worth a Listen

The sophisticated sound work and talented narrators make this worth listening to, but I agree with others that the plot is predictable.

When the mind breaks

This is truly very well written!!! The suspense was perfectly timed! The ending was predictable, but that’s ok it was well worth it! Mental illness is a very real thing, and you never know who suffers in silence. The most “normal” person in the world could suffer from the most crippling form of mental illness and nobody would ever know.
It would be interesting if the recordings were found, or lost in the darkness.

Give this story a shot, you won’t regret it!!!

Hmmm.

This audiobook seem like it was about 200 hours long but I got through it. I’m not sure it was really for me. A long ambient Arctic research station horror story without, IMO, much of a plot. Or perhaps the plot just escaped me. You will definitely like it if you like long ambient dramas without a very firm plot. :)

Must read

I don't normally read pure fiction but this audio book is a "must read" for me.

I'm new to Audible and this is the first time I've "read" a book that was purpose made for this medium, and I was VERY impressed. It has sound effects and different actors playing the different characters, like an old-style "radio play".

This particular book is astonishingly well written considering that it's a work of fiction for a (presumably) undemanding audience and the character development, which is usually severely neglected in works of novel-fiction, is actually central to the story, which I LOVE.

It's not perfect. There are some aspects of the story that were poorly researched. I found the diving segments 'amateuristic' but I'm a technical diver with 35 years of experience. The character of the counselor was also unconvincing to me but then again, my wife is a therapist so I know how a *real* therapist acts. These aspects should have been researched more thoroughly to make them more convincing but I still gave the story 4 stars because of its many other redeeming qualities.

On the whole, it's one of those stories that grips you in the first chapter and doesn't let you go until it's done.

Excellent!

Jeez this was dark

But sometimes dark is a great read. And this one had me guessing all the way through it A solid shocking ending I never saw coming sometimes a little sluggish but worth the time

Slow Start, Does pick up

Super slow to start but does pick up speed with a sad "Black mirror" twist ending.

Predictable ending

The performances were fantastic, but I kept hoping for more. The story ended exactly how I figured it would.

Incredible!

I want more! The performances were amazing, not to mention the storyline was dark and captivating!!! It was perfect. I’m not sure what some of the other listeners were expecting from this title giving such poor reviews? But I personally loved it, and although I could predict the ending, it was still an entertaining ride! Very well done!
