About this listen
In an alternate Renaissance Italy where the church regulates magic and licenses magicians, fiery Fiametta Beneforte wants to be more than her goldsmith-mage father's unpaid apprentice. But when the Duchy of Montefoglia is laid under military and magical siege, she unexpectedly must join with Thur Ochs, a young Swiss miner and foundryman, to tap their skills in both metalwork and necromancy to rescue her father's soul and combat an evil sorcerer.

An Early Gem
Grover Gardner turns in his usual masterful performance in Lois McMaster Bujold's first fantasy novel. Set in Renaissance Italy, Fiametta is the lovestruck daughter of the Duke's metalsmith mage. She dreams as much of the Duke's guard captain as she does of becoming her father's apprentice.
Treachery upends her peaceful life during the betrothal dinner of the Duke's daughter. Fleeing for her life, Fiametta runs into the captain's younger brother and the two team up to recruit allies in their fight to save her father and his brother from a rival lord and his mysterious sorceror who seek to seize the Dukedom.
The Spirit Ring is a little unpolished compared to LMB's later works but still an entertaining tale.

Great story read well
I really enjoyed the setting and storytelling in The Spirit Ring. It’s fun, dark and interesting. If you like GGK’s alternate version of renaissance Italy you should try this

Pretty interesting!
I recommend this book! It was a nice surprise because I was expecting something medieval with superficial story lines but I am happily surprised I picked the book to read/listen to. Both main characters have depth and are interesting (no blendness). The story lines is straightforward but gets turn around to a darker end when tragedy hits. Then Tur encounters Theomeda and together they try to save their lost relatives from a fate that threatens their souls and denies then rest in death.
