John Muir
About this listen
John Muir has left a mark on history in a way that is quite unique. There are very few people whose powerful love for nature has caused such a truly lasting impact as his.
While his early childhood was largely what one would consider normal in Scotland, a life changing event while working in a factory, which nearly blinded him, caused John to totally change the direction of his life. He suddenly found great beauty in every moment, and especially nature and the outdoors. It captivated him, and drove him into a life of exploration, and to write an incredible volume of books and articles, describing the beauty of places like Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada Mountains in a way that captured the imagination of thousands.
While many people have a true passion for nature, it was John’s ability to describe its wonders and elegance that caught the attention of even the highest-ranking people, such as Theodore Roosevelt, and perked their ears to hear what he had to say. His voice, echoing through his writings and advocating for the preservation of forests and ecosystems continues to have an effect today. It was through John’s efforts that the Sierra Club was founded, along with the National Parks System. Because of his efforts, new national parks were designated in the United States, and today those of us who live in the beautiful nation he so loved are enjoying the fruits of his labors. In this volume, as the title simply states, John shares his own story, in his own words. He shares his journey from growing up in Scotland, to his life in the United States. For those who want to go deeper into the life and mind of this great man, this gem cannot be overlooked.
