About this listen

From the author of the beloved Ruth Galloway series, a modern Gothic mystery for fans of The Magpie Murders and The Lake House.

Clare Cassidy is no stranger to murder. A high school English teacher specializing in the Gothic writer R. M. Holland, she teaches a course on it every year. But when one of Clare’s colleagues and closest friends is found dead, with a line from R. M. Holland’s most famous story, “The Stranger”, left by her body, Clare is horrified to see her life collide with the story lines of her favorite literature.

Gothic wonder

Wonderful listen close to Halloween! Loved the male narrator. May not appeal to those who prefer one narrator throughout a story.

Fabulous!

What a terrific mystery! Elly Griffiths does a wonderful job weaving the qualities of the gothic novel into this modern thriller. Excellent performances by the ensemble cast!
A thoroughly satisfying and enjoyable listen/read.

A silly mystery

Not very appealing. I am not sure what the fuss is about. The teenager was written very poorly. The only thing I liked was the stark contrast between perspectives. It did a good job demonstrating everyone sees something different. Otherwise it was a little... silly.

unknown source of evil

Well, let's see, there was a lot of redundancies with no connection the man on the train.
