Kept me curious.. Turned a little scary (spoilers)
I love childrens / young adult reads, and I felt like the author was very good at representing the different ages, genders, and personalities in this book. The storyline was super intriguing and it left me wanting to keep listening. Trying not to give much away, Towards the end, when the story started really setting the scene for the upcoming books, I felt like it was a bit scary, like you're in a bad dream. It's very reminiscent of the Baudelaires in the series of unfortunate events books, where they are on their own and the adults are out of reach to help in some way or another. (Side note, and spoiler, there is some very bad attitude by a teen towards their parent with no consequence, which created this really toxic atmosphere in the book I found. I do hope the book resolves that in the books to come because it promotes very anti-parent and anti-family retoric.) Personally, the thriller factor isn't what draws me to mystery books, and I feel like all the puzzles have been solved at this point of the story and the other books have been set up more for adventure and as a sci-fi / physiological thriller. I'm not sure I will continue with the series.
