About this listen

It's been two months since Will Darling saw Kim Secretan, and he doesn't expect to see him again. What do a rough and ready soldier-turned-bookseller and a disgraced, shady aristocrat have to do with each other anyway?

But when Will encounters a face from the past in a disreputable nightclub, Kim turns up, as shifty, unreliable, and irresistible as ever. And before Will knows it, he's been dragged back into Kim's shadowy world of secrets, criminal conspiracies, and underhand dealings.

This time, though, things are underhanded even by Kim standards. This time, the danger is too close to home. And if Will and Kim can't find common ground against unseen enemies, they risk losing everything.

Contains mature themes.

All around excellent

The story was very intriguing (I actually liked it better than the first one) and there was a good balance between plot elements. Also really good narration

Much Better Than Book One!

This was *much* better than the first book. Will called Kim out on his deceptions, and Kim was finally willing to talk to Will. The lies and secrets, and Will's willingness to overlook Kim's shadiness were what bothered me most in the first book, so this was a great relief.

The plot was interesting, and the romance pleasing. I would only say that there are some instances of telling, rather than showing (though it's not overwhelming), and there were too many characters; I had difficulty following who was who--though that might be because the narrator in the audiobook didn't change his voice much for anyone other than the heroes and their best friends.

Overall, I feel happy about this read, and I hope that there's another coming in the series.

KJ Charles Skillfully Read by Cornell Collins

KJ Charles gives excellent depth to her compelling plots and fascinating characters. Overall one of my favourite authors, her stories are not only charming and witty but have an attention to real complex human emotion and detailed historical accuracy that I absolutely love. Her works explore queer romance attraction and lust through the characters and their stories - rather than the more common focus in this genre where smut is the driving force behind every plot point and character choice (not that there’s nothing wrong with that! but I find the sexual elements much more enjoyable when they happen in a more realistic and naturally occurring setting that flows with the plot)

Cornell Collins once again does a fantastic job of differentiating character voices (accents, pitch, tone, emotion, timing, pattern of speech, etc…) He gives depth to the characters by basing their emotion and speech on their personalities and the context of each sentence. He has a lovely rhythm to his voice and speaks clearly with good recording equipment (he doesn’t talk out of his nose and the sound quality is great).

I genuinely can’t get enough of KJ’s writing and hope Cornell is the one to read them all (I actually wish some of her older books were re-recorded by him as well…)

Excellent

This whole trilogy could not be better. I think this middle one may be the least good? But it doesn’t matter.
