About this listen

Like millions of women, Laura Doyle wanted her marriage to be better. But when she tried to get her husband to be more romantic, helpful, and ambitious, he withdrew - and she was lonely and exhausted from controlling everything. Desperate to be in love with her man again, she decided to stop telling him what to do and how to do it. When Doyle surrendered control, something magical happened. The union she had always dreamed of appeared. The man who had wooed her was back.

The underlying principle of The Surrendered Wife is simple: The control women wield at work and with children must be left at the front door of any marriage. Laura Doyle's matrimony shows women how they can both express their needs and have them met while also respecting their husband's choices. When they do, they revitalize intimacy. The Surrendered Wife will show you how to transform a lonely marriage into a passionate union.

Not awful, but there are better books on the topic

There are some useful suggestions in this book, but I was put off by the number of instances in which the reader is encouraged to just “pretend”, “keep secret” or “act like you feel 'X', even if you don’t really feel "X”. The suggestion that our marriages (and our hearts) benefit from increased dishonesty and deceitfulness, didn’t sit well with me. Lying doesn't produce true intimacy. Also, the whole "wives shouldn't handle household finances" thing felt a little over-emphasized and narrow-visioned. There are better books on the topic that do a great job helping us to grow in emotional maturity, and to live our femininity in an honest, gentle, and beautiful way. (Some suggestions: "Fascinating Womanhood For the Timeless Woman" by Dixie Andelin Forsyth, and "Intimate Communion" by David Deida).

Take with a grain of salt

Although some parts have great pieces, like if you give control, give all of it, other portions of the book are absolutely inane. Verbal abuse is a thing, and can be as damaging as a slap in the face. Financial infeidelty and infidelity break the same thing - trust. None of this is addressed, instead it is glossed over or the listener is encouraged to ignore it.
