About this listen

A haunting tale of apparitions, a cursed manor house, and two generations of women determined to discover the truth, by the author of The Ghost Writer.

Sell the Hall unseen; burn it to the ground and plow the earth with salt, if you will; but never live there…

Constance Langton grows up in a household marked by death, her father distant, her mother in perpetual mourning for Constance's sister, the child she lost. Desperate to coax her mother back to health, Constance takes her to a séance; perhaps she will find comfort from beyond the grave. But the meeting has tragic consequences. Constance is left alone, her only legacy a mysterious bequest that will blight her life.

So begins this brilliant and gripping novel, a dark mystery set in late-Victorian England. It is a world of apparitions, of disappearances and unnatural phenomena, of betrayal and blackmail and black-hearted villains - and of murder. Constance's bequest comes in two parts: a house and a mystery. Years before, a family disappeared at Wraxford Hall, a decaying mansion in the English countryside with a sinister reputation. Now the Hall belongs to Constance, and she must descend into the darkness at the heart of the Wraxford mystery to find the truth - even at the cost of her life.

Fantastic book, fantastic performance

A full-on suspense mystery with a touch of ghost and a smidge of romance (albeit carefully concealed under the cloak in victorian moral control). Once I started teading, I could not set the book down long as I was so caught up in unraveling of the mystery. Highly recommemd this book to anyone who loves a good who-done-it.

Glacial Pacing ☹️

John Harwood offers a story rich in Ghostly Visitations, Seance Encounters, and 19th-century practitioners of Mesmerism. The Victorian narrative has an occult-theme-fed paranormal atmosphere that strives to be intriguing.
Unfortunately, he wastes the opportunity by presenting a series of vignettes intended to introduce the characters.. that doesn't come together until Part IV of the book - more than halfway through. None of the individual experiences are captivating enough to drive interest in themselves.. frequently prompting me to yell at my device: "GET ON WITH IT!!"
Even after the plot coalesced and got going into a mystery, I was underwhelmed. "What happened to all of those ancestors that disappeared?" wasn't a question that I needed answered.

Happily, the drawbacks to the book can't be blamed on the performances. Fiona Hardingham, Katherine Kellgren, and especially Simon Vance are well above-average in exhibiting spot-on diction, comfortable timbre & cadence, and emotive tone (admittedly over-the-top at times). This is a quality listening product.

Altogether, 'The Seance' takes far too long to become marginally interesting and the payoff isn't worth the wait. I rate the audiobook 4.5 stars out of 10. It was a passable "free" distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons.. but spend your Credit elsewhere if they ask for one.
