Publisher's Summary

The fourth volume of The Heritage of Shannara, which continues one of the most popular fantasy series of all time.

The Shadowmen still swarm over the Four Lands, poisoning everything with their dark magic. And their leader is determined to destroy all the Scions of Shannara. For Walker Boh, he dispatches the Four Horsemen. For Wren, he sends an untrue friend. And for Par, he devises the most terrible fate of all. With these traps cleverly laid, the charges given by the shade of the Druid Allanon are doomed to failure - unless Par can discover a way to harness the power of the Sword of Shannara.

Thus continues the enthralling Shannara epic, a spellbinding tale of adventure, magic, and myth....

A worthy listen but nothing spectacular

This is my least favourite of the heritage of Shannara series. The story was quite fragmented I just had to tie up so many loose ends for the other three books. Not as satisfying as I would have liked but it still had some great plot points and characters.

Good read

This trilogy did a good job of bringing together a lot of the ideas in the original Shannara trilogy.

A Decent Conclusion to the Heritage of Shannara

This is classic fantasy, so if you’re looking for a modern grim setting with politics being a key part of the story, this book won’t be for you.

The beginning of the book has a lot of action split between the 4 Ohmsford decedents, and each’s story is entertaining. I would have liked more politics in Wren’s storyline, but otherwise it was good. Even Walker Boh’s story kept me engaged, previously I found Walker Boh’s chapters and most of his story in The Druid of Shannara to be drawn out.

By the end of the book the action had slowed, and I found the actually ending to be a bit dry. Much of the end was predicable and I especially didn’t enjoy how Walker Boh’s story ended.

The series overall is 3 stars.

As narrator John Lee was good, I wish he had more range in creating unique voices for each character.
