About this listen

One life changing moment of madness…

Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, Shari Lapena and Lisa Jewell

It was supposed to be a fresh start. A move to a new town for me and my family.
I’d been offered the perfect position, teaching English at the local high school but then I met sixth form student Nicky Stevens.
Initially flattered by his attention, I let my guard down.
But I had no idea of the monster I’d let into my life or just how far his obsession would go.
Nothing could prepare me for the devastating consequences caused by my one moment of weakness.

Didn’t love the teacher student aspect

It was a bit creepy that this whole book revolves around the affair of a teacher and student.

Not Horrible.. I Guess

Having read a couple of her books, I can conclude that Gemma Rogers has a real talent for writing strikingly unlikable characters that I strangely find myself invested in. Usually a relatable (albeit often flawed) protagonist is required to generate a captivating story for me.. and the chief character in this offering (schoolteacher/mom/wife Izzy Cole) is insecure, too-emotional, over-the-top sexually-frustrated, and maddeningly self-obsessed. I should have been so turned off that I couldn't care less what happened to her. Instead, Rogers is deftly able to make the suspicions & challenges Izzy faces actually fascinating.
The underlying plot progression - involving jawdroppingly bad decisions and a sociopath lothario student - is sophomoric and ends up in a genuinely laughable climactic confrontation, but the book is surprisingly satisfying.

No doubt the truly outstanding narration by Georgia Maguire improves my impression of the book:
Her diction, timbre, cadence, and pacing are remarkable.. more impressive, however, Maguire reads with picture-perfect tone and cinema-quality voice-acting. This is one of those tour-de-force performances of a ho-hum tale that make audiobooks a worthwhile format.

Taking the incredible production standards from Boldwood Books into account, I rate 'Reckless' 5 stars out of 10.
The great sound quality & narration can't make up for a ludicrous story
.. but render the audiobook worth a download if you can get it as a 'Plus' selection (free with your subscription). If they ask for money, however - don't bother.

Immature characters

Gemma Rogers is an amazing writer. I just could not get past the Teacher/ Student relationship most of the time.
I kept listening because as usual Georgia Maguire narration is always a 5 star. She does not disappoint. She really is an amazing narrator and I was determined to finish the book.
The stupidity of the main character was annoying and disturbing all at the same time. The ending was very rushed which was a bit of an annoyance for me as the listener.
I love Gemma Rogers books, love Georgia Maguire’s narration however, this story line was a bit concerning to me.
Still a fan of Gemma Rogers.

Ugh!

I gave it 5 stars only for Georgia Maguire's performance, which I thought was well done. Otherwise, this novel, The Teacher, by Gemma Rogers, was torturous to get through, from beginning to end! The protagonist's choices were consistently the wrong ones, as though she were an inexperienced teenager herself, rather than a nearly 40-year old married mother. The only reason I kept on going to the end was to see if the book would redeem itself. No, it didn't. Everything about this story is wrong, from the protagonist having a sexual relationship with someone under her control, to the physical abuse perpetrated by males against females, and protected by society to protect all kinds of reputations. I do not recommend this novel at all as I found nothing redeeming about it. Just yuck!

Raunchy and wrong!!

I’m sorry, but I can’t get into a book that normalizes or makes the act of a teacher having sex with a student ok. I don’t care that the kid is 18 -she’s a 40 year old teacher and it’s wrong. I can’t listen anymore. I’d give no stars if I could.
