About this listen

The instant number one New York Times best seller!

This program is read by the author.

On March 16, 2018, just 26 hours before his scheduled retirement from the organization he had served with distinction for more than two decades, Andrew G. McCabe was fired from his position as deputy director of the FBI. President Donald Trump celebrated on Twitter: "Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI - A great day for Democracy."

In The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, Andrew G. McCabe offers a dramatic and candid account of his career and an impassioned defense of the FBI's agents and of the institution's integrity and independence in protecting America and upholding our Constitution.

McCabe started as a street agent in the FBI's New York field office, serving under director Louis Freeh. He became an expert in two kinds of investigations that are critical to American national security: Russian organized crime - which is inextricably linked to the Russian state - and terrorism. Under Director Robert Mueller, McCabe led the investigations of major attacks on American soil, including the Boston Marathon bombing, a plot to bomb the New York subways, and several narrowly averted bombings of aircraft. And under James Comey, McCabe was deeply involved in the controversial investigations of the Benghazi attack, the Clinton Foundation's activities, and Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state.

The Threat recounts in compelling detail the time between Donald Trump's November 2016 election and McCabe's firing, set against a pause-resisting narrative spanning two decades when the FBI's mission shifted to a new goal: preventing terrorist attacks on Americans. But as McCabe shows, right now the greatest threat to the United States comes from within, as President Trump and his administration ignore the law, attack democratic institutions, degrade human rights, and undermine the US Constitution that protects every citizen.

Important, revealing, and powerfully argued, The Threat tells the true story of what the FBI is, how it works, and why it will endure as an institution of integrity that protects America.

What the critics say

"McCabe is a nuts-and-bolts narrator; he speaks in an earnest monotone, clear but unchanging. This works nicely in covering such things as the FBI's progression from the J. Edgar Hoover days of chasing bank robbers and suspected Communists to the more modern focus on organized crime and terrorism. Or, better still, when McCabe describes his role in tracking La Cosa Nostra, Russian mobsters and the Boston Marathon bombers. The stories he tells are strong enough to carry themselves." Relentlessly Honest

A Great book, well narrated by the author. I think that hearing Mr McCabe, added additional depth and emotional nuance to the book. The book explains in detail the reasoning and research that made an investigation of the "president" and his band of yes-men not only necessary, but mandatory to protect the citizens and allies of the United States.
I am thankful that men and women with the courage, intelligence and dedication of Mr McCabe and Mr Comey are doing their job and are unwilling to be sidetracked or intimidated by greedy, self serving sociopathic politicians. (For whom Donald Trump is the poster child)
I recommend this book to anyone who believes in the importance of democracy & the rule of law. And I applaud the efforts of thousands of unseen patriots, who ( like Mr McCabe ) work tirelessly, ( often at great risk to themselves and their families ) to protect their country from those who willingly conspire with known enemies, ignore and undermine the intent and letter of the law and the Constitution for the opportunity to line their pockets and satisfy their boundless ego's.
This book gives you a glimpse of the job that the intelligence services do, of the rules of law that guide them and the dedication of the people who work for them. Interesting and informative.

Articulate, Detailed, and Compelling

FBI credo forms the skeleton of this book, given flesh by a clear and linear recollection of McCabe's most notable experiences within the organization.

More FBI insights in the age of Trump

A worthwhile listen, although I confess to tiring of reading more on Trump's antics. I chose this book, as it essentially picks up where James Comey's account left off. With Comey fired, McCabe began the acting director of the FBI, but not for long. Cruelly and vindictively fired just hours before he would have received his pension, Americans have McCabe to thank for getting Robert Meuller installed as special investigator - and ensuring he couldn't be axed. Bit of a nail biter on that front. Lots of FBI and White House insights.

You will gain a better understanding of the FBI

McCabe provides a first person view of his career in the FBI culminating in his experience of dealing with the current president. Unfortunately, it will confirm your worst suspicions about Trump's venality and vindictive behaviour.

Believeable Read

Saddest part is the majority of the American public who actually voted for Trump will never be able to comprehend they voted a career white collar criminal into the office of President. They’ll simply default to the old cop out that all politicians are criminals.

Honorable man

I read several Trump books, including Bob Woodward's. Mccabe's is the most trustworthy one of all.

Krystal

This book has incredible insight on how the FBI is run during the most dramatic incidents in international history. It’s the memoir of a frontline worker whom rosed the ranks during the age of terrorism. This is a story of a patriot whom is speaking out in worrisome times to ensure the public that a deep state conspiracy is not the institution McCabe has devoted his life to. I found McCabe 100% credible and honest. I found his life and his stories aspiring. I found his stories regarding the Trump administration only solidifying what most news literate already know that the Trump administration has far from the “Best People” that incompetence is it’s mandate and eating up people who serve the constitution is their game.

Fantastic Memoir!

I thought that Andrew McCabe's work was an excellent account of how life is like as an FBI agent. He painted a terrifying picture of what it is like working under President Trump. He gave solid arguments on the importance of speaking the truth, and respecting the rule of law despite living in a world of political divisiveness and the promotion of alternative facts. I definitely recommend listening to this!
