What the critics say

"A wonderful novel, in the old and good tradition, with intrigue, love, mystery and tender, audacious and clean-cut characters." (Mario Vargas Llosa, recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature)
How can a novel be both cruel and tender, dark and luminous all at the same time, and keep the reader glued to its pages with a complex, captivating narrative? MarÍa DueÑas's novel manages to make this possible with a tale that is destined to become a literary classic." (Javier Sierra, bestselling author of The Secret Supper and The Lady in Blue)
"The Time in Between is a magnificent novel that flawlessly brings together history and intrigue. Sira Quiroga – the seamtress – won’t be easily forgotten.” (Juan GÓmez-Jurado, author of The Moses Expedition)

Lovely story, poor choice of narrator.

As with many translations some content was not as strong but overall the story was lovely. However, the choice of the narrator made it almost impossible to enjoy.

Decent tale, terrible narrator

I think this story is pretty good. I found the early parts engaging, although the latter bits got less so, as the events in Lisbon played out. I found that part fairly un-credible. My impression of the story had to be filtered, though, through a truly awful narration - the first narration on Audible I've found that wasn't an addition to the story. I'm not going into details, but there were multiple mispronunciations of words, frequent oddities of emphasis, an apparent lack of comprehension of what she was reading, and, most irritatingly, so many glaringly obvious "patches" (where a word, phrase, or sentence is re-recorded and punched into the previous recording to repair an error). It was something of a nightmare, although I did slog through to the bitter end, so I guess the story was pretty good after all.
