Publisher's Summary

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Clare and Henry's story unfolds from both points of view, depicting the effects of time travel on their marriage and their passionate love for each other. They attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

What the critics say

  • Alex Award Winner, 2004

"Highly original first novel....Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes....It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." (Publishers Weekly)

Lovely

Lovely story. Was very drawn in, the beginning was hard to wrap my head around, but once I got the direction of the story, it made sense.

Good performance of a too-long story

I listened while working on mundane projects at work, and sometimes my mind wandered due to the long, drawn-outedness of this story. As someone who also experienced a fertility struggle, I was surprised I didn't really feel emotional about that part. I think it just too long to get to that bit and I wasn't very invested. It was an okay story, glad it was free in the Audible library and I can send my hard copy off to the thrift shop.

What is time but a human construct or is it Devine. Time will tell if there is enough time.

Enjoyed every moment

I read this book many times years ago , and the audio book did not disappoint. The narration was really well done and added to the story . Highly recommend.

Beautiful Story

A beautiful story that is both sad and romantic. Definitely has you thinking of the possibilities of life if this was the reality of existence. One of my favourites by far.

Beautiful and Tragic

A beautiful love story spanning decades snd generations that wonderfully describes living in the nineties as young lovers.

Loooooooooong. But interesting.

Very interesting premise for a story. But maybe try the abridged version? Unless you like listening to a shopping list of 25 items, or a list of literally every piece of clothing being put on (specificity level: underpants… bra… tights… dress… shoes… eyeliner… lipstick…).

Well written, but tedious

The book was just too long. The first and last third were too drawn out. The middle was okay. I often read long classics and what keeps me going are interesting insights or quality in describing situations up close. Sometimes this book had that, but often it didn't, and left me asking, why are you telling me this? The entire time travel conceit, while well executed, was interesting, and evoked some philosophical musings of the non linearity of ordinary time, but could have been realized in a shorter work. Anyway, glad this one's over.
