About this listen
A city threatened by unimaginable horrors must trust their most hated outcast, or lose everything, in this crushing epic fantasy debut.
After 10 years on the run, dodging daemons and debt, reviled magician Edrin Walker returns home to avenge the brutal murder of his friend. Lynas had uncovered a terrible secret, something that threatened to devour the entire city. He tried to warn the Arcanum, the sorcerers who rule the city. He failed. Lynas was skinned alive and Walker felt every cut. Now nothing will stop him from finding the murderer.
Magi, mortals, daemons, and even the gods - Walker will burn them all if he has to. After all, it wouldn't be the first time he's killed a god....

gotta love manipulation magic
As someone who plays a manipulation shaman in Shadowrun, I had so much fun listening to this story. Not what I expected at all. Can't wait to read the next one... in fact I shall start now

Great read, but better in physical
The narration is fantastic. The writing is enjoyable although a bit chaotic. The biggest draw back in audio vs physical is that there are a lot of small details that get lost in the narration. Again the performance is good, but there are almost two many small details in the writing that you won't really pickup on unless you are purely focused on listening to this and doing nothing else, or reading and listening to the audio at the same time (just speaking on listening to the audio to get details). I personally wanted to use this for when I was driving, and still just read it physically at home, and both ways offer vastly different experiences because of how packed with detail this story actually is, I stopped listening to the audio unless I wasn't doing anything else and just laid on a couch listening sometimes. Would definitely recommend this series though. Felt a bit like First Law-light although some situations are probably worse, just the overall feel isn't quite a bleak. the humour is very similar as well. Moving on to the next half of the duology right now 🤘

sadly a book that should be read and listened to
the plot was decent but sadly the protagonist's accent is extremely annoying and frankly inauthentic. disappointing was really looking forward to listening to a riveting story.
