About this listen

Hunted by a shadowy foe in Bloody Mary’s court, Brendan Prescott plunges into London’s treacherous underworld to unravel a dark conspiracy that could make Elizabeth queen - or send her to her death.

England, 1553. Harsh winter encroaches upon the realm. Mary Tudor has become queen to popular acclaim, and her enemies are imprisoned in the Tower. But when she’s betrothed to Philip, Catholic prince of Spain, putting her Protestant subjects in peril, rumors of a plot to depose her swirl around the one person many consider to be England’s heir and only hope: the queen’s half-sister, Princess Elizabeth.

Haunted by his past, Brendan Prescott lives far from the intrigues of court. But his time of refuge comes to an end when his foe and mentor, the spymaster Cecil, brings him disquieting news that sends him on a dangerous mission. Elizabeth is held captive at court, the target of the Spanish ambassador, who seeks her demise. Obliged to return to the palace where he almost lost his life, Brendan finds himself working as a double agent for Queen Mary herself, who orders Brendan to secure proof that will be his cherished Elizabeth’s undoing.

Plunged into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a mysterious opponent who hides a terrifying secret, Brendan races against time to retrieve a cache of the princess’ private letters, even as he begins to realize that in this dark world of betrayal and deceit, where power is supreme and sister can turn against sister, nothing - and no one - is what it seems.

The Story Continues

Book 2 of the Spymaster Chronicles builds and expands on the story. The suspense doesn't flag. Surprises around every corner. What I enjoy so much with this series is that the language used is carefully avoiding modern vernaculars and you feel that you are reading the accounts of contemporaries who lived in 1554. To summarize: As he races against time to retrieve a cache of private letters and halt a conspiracy that could make Elizabeth queen or send her to her death, Brendan faces unimaginable loss. Plunged into London’s treacherous underbelly in search of the truth, he discovers that in this world of betrayal and deceit, where power is supreme and sister can turn against sister, nothing—and no one—is what it seems. (I must say that the people at that time must have been a lot tougher that we are now, I would have thought that most men would have succumbed to the injuries Brendan received in the span of a few days... But that's the power of fiction for you. 🙂)

great story!

i love learning about the Tudors, but this story specifically is my favourite so far. the narrator was phenomenal! i always knew what character he was reading. i am not sure however, if it is based on true accounts, or if it is actually all historical. Regardless, it was an absolutely awesome book to listen to. Thank-you so much.

Great Story

A poignant re-telling of history. Though the characters are fictional C.W. GORTMER makes the listener want to hear the rest of the story. It has been a pleasure to listen to the story.

It was cut short

I really enjoyed the book and then it just ended abruptly. So much more was left hanging. Too bad

Read the first book but this one I just can't

So I read the first book in the series and it was decent , good enough to keep me going to the second book.. But that's it for me. I had a really hard time struggling to get through it and finally gave up 3/4 of the way through. It's just dull compared to the last book.
