About this listen
Born on the Norwegian island that bears her name, Ingrid Barrøy’s world is circumscribed by storm-scoured rocks and the moods of the sea by which her family lives and dies. But her father dreams of building a quay that will end their isolation, and her mother longs for the island of her youth, and the country faces its own sea change: the advent of a modern world, and all its unpredictability and violence.
Brilliantly translated into English by Don Bartlett and Don Shaw, The Unseen is the first book in the Ingrid Barrøy Trilogy and a profoundly moving exploration of family, resilience, and fate.

The Importance of Place
The love this author has for this isolated windswept place and the people who live there is clear throughout the book. The way the setting is constructed into every character and each event in the plot makes the 'island' a living, breathing place. I feel like I could take someone on a tour and point out all the different pastures, the dried fish, the eiderdown and the kitchen chairs. To be honest, after reading this book, I'll never take a kitchen chair for granted again. I won't spoil it for you by explaining why because you should really read this book. It is entrancing.
