About this listen
Carl Sagan's prophetic vision of the tragic resurgence of fundamentalism and the hope-filled potential of the next great development in human spirituality
The late great astronomer and astrophysicist describes his personal search to understand the nature of the sacred in the vastness of the cosmos. Exhibiting a breadth of intellect nothing short of astounding, Sagan presents his views on a wide range of topics, including the likelihood of intelligent life on other planets, creationism and so-called intelligent design, and a new concept of science as "informed worship". Originally presented at the centennial celebration of the famous Gifford Lectures in Scotland in 1985 but never published, this book offers a unique encounter with one of the most remarkable minds of the twentieth century.

Clear, concise, fair, reasoned and totally logical
Clear, concise, fair, reasoned and totally logical. If a religious person reading this doesn’t get any doubts implanted in their mind, then they are ruled solely by their strong desires and emotions.
As Professor Sagan stresses, don’t muddle the term God with a version of nature or science as they are not the same. Let’s just call it science — which isn’t a religion but a way of seeking truth through creative hypotheses and skeptical inquiries. Our focus must be on seeking evidence that is independently verifiable.
I’d rather say “I don’t know” then close my mind to all we have and will discover about our origins, our existence and our future. Get used to some questions being left unanswered. The true “miracle” is we’re simply here, breathing and self-aware enough to ask these fundamental questions.
The cosmos is much more compelling and awe-inspiring than any ancient scripture could have fathomed so let us finally leave the mental crutch and social division of religion behind and focus on what unites us all: our shared humanity and this very fragile earthly home.
