About this listen
A Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestseller.
"Cleverly crafted.... The Vine Witch is a grown-up fairy tale with a twisty-turn-y story line of magic, love, and betrayal that holds your attention.... Pure escapism." --Forbes
A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy set in turn-of-the-century France.
For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.
Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn't endorse the locals' belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she'll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won't rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

"The vineyards of the fictitious Chanceaux Valley play home to magic, romance, and mystery in Smith’s contemporary debut fantasy.... The specter of savage, early European witch hunts ups the stakes, mixing real history with folklore...this is an ambitious debut from a promising author." --Publishers Weekly

Variety
Loved diversity of magical beings within the characters and the speed of the story. And surprised at the turn at the end

It’s ok
I don’t have any grand jesters to make about this book it’s just ok. It’s pretty descriptive about vine yards and wine so there’s that but if your not into that then it’s just ok

Wonderful story, with well thought out characters
The story was wonderful. And the narrating was on point.
It wasn't overwhelmed by adult situations, which I had been mildly expecting. It didn't have lulls that made it hard to keep going.
Overall a very good book.

GOOD BOOK IF YOU LIKE WINE AND WITCHES!
I see that some reviews either loved it or hated it; I am in the middle. I found it a very entertaining story that would actually make a fun movie to watch curled up on the couch with popcorn and wine!
I loved the performance by Susannah Jones. She does a beautiful job.
The story is a bit weak sometimes, but it kept me entertained and intrigued to find out who and why...

A tale of magic, romance, and revenge
I think the narrator was cast well; her voice was a good match for the general age of the main character and she was able to capture the different male voices without sounding forced.
The story itself was very fun, although a little predictable in some spots. I enjoyed the general feel of "earthy magic", and the descriptions of the wine were really lovely throughout. A good read/listen overall.

Good, but I was unsatisfied
The worldbuilding was great and I enjoyed the overall plot but the romance aspect of the story left me unsatisfied. There was the thread of a developing relationship all through the book, seeming like it was building up to something significant but then it ended with a brief description of a kiss and a vague implication that he went to second base. Then in the following chapter, aside from a chaste kiss, they act way more like friendly associates than people who just confessed romantic feelings for each other. To me, this was a case of telling instead of showing; we were told via narration that they were in love, but it really wasn't shown in their actions, leaving me feeling like that thread of the story still had a loose end that wasn't tied up.
