About this listen

When the husband of the king’s mistress is poisoned, Josie must pretend he died of natural causes, or risk putting her own life in danger. It’s yet another secret she must learn to keep, yet another intrigue whispered about in the gilded halls of King Leon’s mysterious palace.

With her enemies intent on ruining her, Josie needs all the friends she can get. Friends that include the captain of the guards, a man determined to find out about his past before he gives in to desire.

As the captain becomes more certain that magic stole the servants’ memories, some very powerful people also hear the whispers of magic and begin to wonder. With rivals from several quarters closing in on the truth, events are set in motion that could change the course of the kingdom, and see the palace servants and Josie lose everything.

Love the narrator - she brings life to the story

I really enjoy all of CJ Archer's work - this series is a tad *spicier* than her other stories. Relatively speaking, it's still a clean story like her others but I find that there is more talk about breasts & male nether regions than her other stories. In her other stories as soon as the FMC & MMC get romantic, the scene fades to dark...in this series, the FMC gets sexually assaulted a lot (not rape) but definitely inappropriate physical touch. It made me gasp a couple times - hopefully, as the story evolves, the FMC isn't battered around so much. She is slapped, kicked, fondled...omg, the poor girl must be traumatized.

Wonderful book.

When the husband of the mistress of the king is poisoned, there is unrest between the nobles and the king feels he is a target. Josie and the Captain have much to do. And things go rapidly downhill from there.

This is the third book in the After the Rift series. This series is set in a whole new world with magic and almost a Middle Ages feel. The characters are simply amazing, complete with strengths and weakness that make them seem real. With the great descriptions we are able to visualize the setting and get a feel for the people who live there. I love how the characters interact with each other and the witty dialogue. As the story progresses the chapters continue to become more dimensional. The mystery is great and definitely worth the read. The story continues to improve and get more and more interesting. I really enjoyed this.book.

The performance really added depth to the story. It was amazing.
