About this listen
A breathtaking new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anxious People and A Man Called Ove, The Winners returns to the close-knit, resilient community of Beartown for a story about first loves, second chances, and last goodbyes.
Over the course of two weeks, everything in Beartown will change.
Maya Andersson and Benji Ovich, two young people who left in search of a life far from the forest town, come home and joyfully reunite with their closest childhood friends. There is a new sense of optimism and purpose in the town, embodied in the impressive new ice rink that has been built down by the lake.
Two years have passed since the events that no one wants to think about. Everyone has tried to move on, but there’s something about this place that prevents it. The destruction caused by a ferocious late-summer storm reignites the old rivalry between Beartown and the neighboring town of Hed, a rivalry which has always been fought through their ice hockey teams.
Maya’s parents, Peter and Kira, are caught up in an investigation of the hockey club’s murky finances, and Amat—once the star of the Beartown team—has lost his way after an injury and a failed attempt to get drafted into the NHL. Simmering tensions between the two towns turn into acts of intimidation and then violence. All the while, a fourteen-year-old boy grows increasingly alienated from this hockey-obsessed community and is determined to take revenge on the people he holds responsible for his beloved sister’s death. He has a pistol and a plan that will leave Beartown with a loss that is almost more that it can stand.
As it beautifully captures all the complexities of daily life and explores questions of friendship, loyalty, loss, and identity, this emotion-packed novel asks us to reconsider what it means to win, what it means to lose, and what it means to forgive.

Lifting!
Amazing lifting story. A life lesson of philosophy using sport and neighborhood to remind us that we are all connected.

This is probably the best series of books I’ve ever written. Without giving too much away, while this story is about more difficult subject matter, don’t let that scare you away. It makes you cry one sentence and laugh the next, and I have never fallen in love with a fictional character the same way I fell in love with Benji. The story is gripping, delightful, heart-wrenching, and hilarious all at once, and I can’t recommend these books enough.

Too preachy
Book was very preachy and the worst storyline of the series. Some nice moments and a good story, nice conclusion with action, but very drawn out and in-your-face about what is right and wrong. Meh. Books went downhill from first one to this conclusion. Not terrible but not great

I love Fredrik Blackman’s books, especially this series. They are very sad but funny and happy too.

Just wow
This might be the best set of three books I’ve ever listened to. Love, loss, joy, tears. Simply outstanding read/listen.

Emotionally Exhausting
Backmann does an expert job in this book and in the series as a whole of telling a story by divulging only small details at a time - and not always in chronological order. At times this can be frustrating but then in the end you realize why it had to be told that way. These books are more than just hockey. They’re about people, social systems, communities and culture. They are about consequences; consequences of actions that seem unrelated to the final result. This series is an expert demonstration of the snowball effect, generational trauma, burden and greater impact. Honestly, I struggled to stick with this series. I found it long, drawn out, often hard to follow and boring at times. At other times I found them exciting, suspenseful and sad. I guess the books reflect life. I really don’t feel like I can give this (these) book(s) a rating. My rating changes with every chapter. I could rate the story, the telling, the message and they would all be different. In the end I rate this series WORTH READING.
