In the Dark Ages, a legendary warrior arises to unite a divided land . . .
_________
Uther, the High King of Britain, is dead.
His only heir is the infant Mordred. Yet each of the country's lesser kings seek to claim the crown for themselves.
While they squabble and spoil for war, a host of Saxon armies gather, preparing for invasion.
But no one has counted on the fearsome warlord Arthur.
Handed power by Merlin and pursuing a doomed romance with the beautiful Guinevere, Arthur knows he will struggle to unite the country – let alone hold back the Saxon enemy at the gates.
Yet destiny awaits him . . .

Pretty brutal depiction of post roman Britain.
Grew on me after getting through initial strangeness but once the world is built, immensely enjoyable and kept me busy on Wikipedia. Apart from long winded exposition, very interesting and a brutal affair.

Not perfect but pretty damn close.
I've owned this on both paper and audiobook and the both are great. The voice actor did a good job on this one. some of the characters aren't how I imagined them but it's not really a problem. 5/5 from me.

Good 1st book. I will continue the Series
The writing was top notch. Very fluid and eloquent at times. The character work was decent but not deep enough for me to be invested in a lot of the side characters. The story was intriguing and definitely has left me wanting to come back for about two. The narration was spectacular. Top-notch

A Master Piece
Cornwell is the best writer ever. I had read this trilogy before a decade ago. Since then I became a fan. Have read more than 25 books written by BC and the more I read other writers, the more I miss his books. If you have never read any of Cornwell’s books, this one is perfect start.

Incredible narration
This is the best narration I have ever heard in an audiobook! Truly brings the story alive and with just the right intonations and spirit. I’ll be looking for other books narrated by Johnathon Keeble!

Excellent!
Bernard Cornwell is one of my all-time favourite historical fiction authors, and Jonathan Keeble (who also reads the first four books of The Last Kingdom series) interprets this story superbly, capturing the gruffness, brutality and passion of post-Roman Britain. I will definitely listen to this again in the future, and anything by Cornwell with Keeble reading is top of my post for future listens!
