About this listen
A detailed account of one of the strangest and most shocking episodes in American history, written by the author of "The Lottery".
Stories of magic, superstition, and witchcraft were strictly forbidden in the little town of Salem Village. But a group of young girls ignored those rules, spellbound by the tales told by a woman named Tituba. When questioned about their activities, the terrified girls set off a whirlwind of controversy as they accused townsperson after townsperson of being witches. Author Shirley Jackson examines in careful detail this horrifying true story of accusations, trials, and executions that shook a community to its foundations.

excellent for the times
The book was written in the 50s and there has been a lot of new information that came out but everything that was said here is all true and the reasons why it happened in the first place don't matter. It's just that it did happen and it discusses the start of the frenzy and what happened after it had ended. You won't be disappointed.

interesting
A short and interesting account of the Salem witch trials. the story has a more general focus and only the details of the first few of the accused were shared.

What an insane time…
Legendary horror writer, Shirley Jackson, writes an interesting nonfiction account of the 1692 witch trials in Massachusetts. The timing of the original printing is interesting, as McCarthyism began in 1954, and this too discusses how easily that blatant lies, petty grievances, and mass hysteria can ruin innocent people’s lives. The fact that anyone believed the ridiculous behaviour of the “afflicted” children who triggered the accusations is mind-boggling…but then you look around you and you’re like, “oh no, I totally get it.” Gabrielle de Cuir does a great job narrating, too. Definitely worth a listen.

Really enjoyed this. I would have liked to learn more about the girls who brought this all about.
