About this listen
A chilling new version of Susan Hill’s classic ghost story, narrated by Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, The Lazarus Project).
Eel Marsh house stands alone, surveying the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Mrs Alice Drablow lived here as a recluse. Now Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor with a London firm, is summoned to attend her funeral, unaware of the tragic and terrible secrets which lie behind the house's shuttered windows.
It is not until he glimpses a young woman at the funeral with a wasted face, dressed all in black, that a sense of profound unease begins to creep over him, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk about the woman in black or what happens whenever she is seen.
Kipps has to stay on in the lonely house, sorting out Mrs. Drablow's papers. The mist begins to enshroud it and the surrounding graveyard and the high tide cuts it off from the outside world....

Frustrating sound mixing. Otherwise a great story.
This audiobook has two components. The main narrator speaking, and dialogue from characters in the story.
I found the dialogue portions to be very low in volume compared to the narrator, who is crisp and clear.
This was frustrating for me because I had to keep rewinding and playing with my volume so that I could hear everything.
Otherwise things a great ghost story!

great book and a great narrator
I watched the movie for this novel a while back, but always wanted to read the book, so seeing it as a free download, I added it to my library and I'm happy I did.
This book was narrated but with sound effects so listening to it with headphones at home alone totally immersed me in the spooky atmosphere. I love spooky stories, so this one didn't disappoint, but I forgot how sad it was as well.
I've never listened to a book narrated by Paapa Essiedu before, but he did an awesome job. His voice was quite soothing, which lulls you into a fake sense of calm but then the sound effects shock you out of that calm.

Gut gripping suspense
I don’t believe I have ever heard such a suspense filled story as this. And at no time along did I ever guess a potential outcome as this. Well done.

A chilling story, well-written and fantastically performed. The narrator and soundscape completely brought the story to life.

Incredible sound effects & music
The language used in the story was frequently repeated so I wasn’t a fan. But the reader and the sound effects and music were so good!!

An Excellent Story Only Made Better by a Great Production
It’s difficult to attain the suspension of disbelief within novels of this genre, but Dame Susan Hill certainly achieves this and so much more. On par with Peter Straub’s Ghost Story, this novel ranks among the best period pieces of supernatural horror. Moreover, Paapa Essiedu’s narration is absolutely superb, with his clipped British diction adding to the increasing horror as the plot progresses. For anyone who enjoys scary fiction, Woman in Black is top shelf.
