About this listen

"Matthews weaves suspense and mystery within an absorbing love story. Readers will be hard put to set this one down before the end." (Library Journal, starred review)

An Uncommon Beauty....

Hidden away in rural Devonshire, Phyllida Satterthwaite has always been considered more odd than beautiful. But in London, her oddity has made her a sensation. Far worse, it’s caught the eye of the sinister Duke of Moreland - a notorious art collector obsessed with acquiring one-of-a-kind treasures. To escape the duke’s clutches, she’s going to need a little help.

An Unlikely Hero....

Captain Arthur Heywood’s days of heroism are long past. Grievously injured in the Peninsular War, he can no longer walk unaided, let alone shoot a pistol. What use can he possibly be to a damsel in distress? He has nothing left to offer except his good name.

Can a marriage of convenience save Philly from the vengeful duke? Or will life with Arthur put her - and her heart - in more danger than ever?

Third time's not the charm

This book didn't live up to the standard of the first two in the series. The plot twists were rather predictable, there was too much "he loves me he loves me not" on Kate's part and too much self-doubt and hesitation on Charles's. Alex Wyndham did his usual fine job.

Enjoyable story, reasonable characters. Worth it.

I took a chance on the author, not having read any of her other works and was not disappointed! I was sold by other reviewers that said it was a refreshing romance without the annoying, classic “grand misunderstanding”, secrets and lies. They were right! The hero and heroine connect early in the book and their journey together is one of friendship into love. They actually face and discuss their concerns instead of hiding and moping through the entire book. Very refreshing! Plus both characters are likeable and you want them to succeed.

The writing style is very good. It’s a quality book, not your average period-piece bodice ripper that feels totally out of place for the time period. Everything about it felt like a real development of a courtship and there was nothing that felt jarringly out of place like in some books I’ve read.

I enjoyed it so much, I went on to purchase the “Parish Orphans of Devon” series by the same author and am finishing the third book in that series already.

I find authors whose style I like and then usually consume everything they write, like Georgette Heyer. I feel like Mimi Matthews and I are just beginning a beautiful friendship.

If I had any critique it was that Alex Wyndham took some getting used to. He tends to talk in a slow, breathy kind of style that bothered me at first, until I got used it. Once I got used to the style, I found he has a very nice voice. I’m glad because he’s narrated 2 out of the 3 of the others books and it would have been hard to continue otherwise. I do find he does read slow, so I bump the audible app up sometimes to 1.25 speed and that’s better for me.

Worth a gamble on this author for sure if you’re looking for quality entertainment for a few hours.
